  • Just got Suse 9.1

Still using windows to post this, but hopefully I can reply to this post using a freshly installed Suse Linux 9.1 Professional Campus Version.

Lets see if I can manage a smooth windows --> linux transition this time

Took me about 50 minutes to get from inserting the DVD to this point

    Not bad.

Now I got a whole new OS to mess around with

cups = common unix printing system

I believe Suse has some nice setup tools for it

I still have some difficulties, because it does not recognize my Canon S750 and doesnt seem to have any drivers for it.

Managed to get it to work with Turbo Print, but unless I pay for it it always prints the Turbo Print logo on the top of the page (and pretty big, too)

Oh well, there's a way to get there, and I'll figure it out somehow

In version 9 they didn't work. Had to use KDE print manager which uses cups to tell it where the printer was. If I used cups directly, it went I can't see that printer on that XP machine.

CUPS is shite and needs putting in the waste basket asap.

I wonder if it's just that trying to do networked printers through cups just blows (using the local printer works fine, and even networking one when it's two linux boxes works fine, it's just I've had trouble getting from my linux box, to print on a printer connected to an XP box.)

The weird experience I had was with one of those HP all-in-one things, (a 1210 model, I think...) Basically what happened, is CUPS sent the page to be printed to the printer, XP's printer queue even listed it, BUT it just sat there and would NOT print. In fact, it wouldn't let me cancel the damned thing either. I literally had to rip the drivers out of XP and re-install them fresh. And that's no easy task with HP's drivers.... Go figure on the same computer, I installed the hpijs driver for debian and it worked flawlessly. Worked better/easier than the windows printer drivers. Good thing HP supports linux as well as they do....

Nothing better than cups telling you that you don't have the rights to delete your own print job.
Cups definatly needs rewriting and the tech support needs to be in english.

Anyone know if there are drivers for the s750 from canon under linux?

I got it printing by telling linux its a s630, but its not perfect (better than as s800 though, everything came out a little pale with that)
