maybe that you have to answer a HUGE survey... and by that they judge whether you're worthy of it?

I probably could have... but NO.. I had to go to work, and didn't have time to fill out that survey...

Oh well, I'm a Debian user myself, and I like it a lot... I just wish Matrox would get off their arses and release a new linux driver that doesn't make X crash everytime I try to log out.

It doesn't crash Linux, it crashes X. One thing Linux still does far better than Windows is having an element or application fail without taking down the whole system (though NT is much better than 9x).

Yeah, as Wombat said... it doesn't crash Linux... The Linux kernel itself is DAMNED hard to crash. X on the other hand.... you have a driver that doesn't clear out the memory properly.. (at least I think that's what it's doing.... basically when I try to exit X, the screen just goes black... I know it's still working, because if I hit Alt+F1 and then Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I can tell it is starting to shut down to reboot, but then it stops on GDM or XFree86 which is hanging... I know this especially if I do Alt+F1 before logging out, and try to reboot from the console.

Windows XX on the other hand... since there really is no seperation from the kernel and the GUI, a driver for the GUI will/can kill the whole system, and even make it so it won't boot again! Never had that problem with linux (fingers crossed that I never do....)

Pity you can't read I didn't say Linux crashed I said something crashed in Linux and I was having a joke.

I had Linux die with a driver upgrade I've had Linux die by flashing a cards bios. For some reason Linux then decided to try and boot of a drive that never was there in the first place. I had Linux die completly deleting word perfect.

Anyway how do you repair a Linux system thats suffering from a Kernal Panic?????

sync the drives, reboot the machine. Next time, choose a different kernel to boot up in, or boot up single user and install another kernel.

Now say that in English and how can you sink the drives when machine won't boot????

Single user didn't work either and there wasn't option to boot another kernel.

The only times I've ever had a kernel panic, was when I forgot to set up the initrd.img to load up the SCSI drivers (since I have had SCSI devices since the first PC I built and the first time I used linux (RedHat 4.2) I would imagine that the same would happen if you didn't have the SATA drivers compiled into your kernel and don't have a initial ramdisk to load up the drivers from.

Never had to sync my drives... the biggest thing I've ever screwed up that I never could get fixed right was the rpm database on Redhat (8 or 9, can't recall which) Never had any luck on rpm based distros, though Mandrake I think was the best that I had tried out of them.

That's what boot disks are for.
