  • Linux Distro?

    All,

I'm looking to replace WINXP as my OS for a bunch of reasons that I'm not going to go into in this post. I have been downloading and trying several distro's of Linux. I've tried SuSE (9.1,9.2), the Novell Desktop, Mandrake (10.1), Ubuntu (4.10) and Fedora (3). I have also dabbled in UNIX by trying FREEBSD and Solaris. All of these have their good and bad points and I don't want this post to devolve into which distro is the best, my question relates to community and indirectly to support...

In your opinion, which distro community most closely resembles the MURC?

Your opinions and feedback are appreciated as always.

I prefer Debian, a nice user base with many helpfull people, and sivil tone. And many skilled people but that is in general for all linux distros and I also love the Apt-get function.

hmm.. i am a very basic user in linux.. my transition is an ongoing process , so i dont want to get down and dirty with linux unless i want to, so i am using SuSE (9.0 at the moment cant see any reason to upgrade as it is running smoothly). My main OS is win2000 but SuSE does most of what i need just as well and i like its Yast online update function (similar to Apt-get?)
A few of us use SuSE but i find it hard to answer your question as to which distro would resemble MURC as we have people using almost every flavour including some rare obscure ones

I'd suggest Ubuntu, only because they have a great forum set up over at www.ubuntuforums.org go check it out and see if it's MURCish enough for ya. I post over there quite a bit.

Tried Ubuntu but wasn't impressed. Failed to detect some hardware correctly which is surprising as it had been around for several years.

Hope you like doing some consoile commands becuase you'll need sooner or later.

Odd, what hardware didn't it detect? Even my nice brand spanking new Neo2 Platinum had everything detected right off the bat. Even detected the Gigabit lan and the Nvidia 10/100 card and asked which I was using.

              I vote Ubuntu as well.

It is the distro that displaced Windows for me...

Soundblaster Audigy2, I'll let it off the Graphics card and several of the 875 motherboard devices weren't detected properly. That sent it to the recycle bin for me.

That's very odd. I have a Audigy 2 platinum and it detected that perfectly. The only time it didn't (and this is probably your problem) is if the onboard sound is enabled. Disable the onboard sound in the Bios (it probably detected that one instead.)

Not sure if that's you posting on the ubuntuforums, but it probably is

Nope nothing to do with onboard sound.

Forget about OpenBSD or NetBSD. FreeBSD is fine

I think either you're just cursed... or one other possibility.

A guy I know set up Xandros on his computer. He was dualbooting with WinXP. It took a while, but I figured it out... he wasn't getting sound in Xandros, but he was in windows.... it was because of the PCI slot that his Audigy 2 was in. He'd put it in one slot, and it would work in Xandros, but not in Windows even... finally he found the right one. That may be your problem... I know it's odd, but it worked.

Ubuntu is good. I like it. Though using Hoary is a bit more unstable than Debian Sid has ever been for me.... Many times I've had to remove my .gnome2 directory, because Gnome would just stop loading. Then again, I am using the 2.9.x which is the development stuff... can't wait 'til April, Gnome 2.10 should be sweet.

                            I wonder when/if/ever they'll go to Gnome 3.

                              All,

Okay, I have installed Ubuntu again, latest stable, works for me. Now I'm off to the forums.

Have the latest FREEEBSD on standby...

                              Thanks,
