  • Time to re-install Suse 9.2

Seems to be rather confused over what ATI drivers it's using.

If I install the latest rpm it says it's conflicting with an earlier version.

If I try and remove the earlier version it says the earlier version not installed.

If I try and force the new install it still complains.

Try remove the latest it says it's not installed.

Re-install it again and then try and remove it it says it's not installed.

If I just ignore the above farce and follow the Suse readme for the ATI drivers everything seems to go properly. XF config seems to be loading it etc.

But if I look at the various log files the story is different. Theres certainly no 3d accerlation.

This mess came around with the orginal poor instructions from ATI which killed the Xserver completetly. I had to reconfigure it using X86config which probably wasn't a good idea.

Probably quicker to slap the DVD in and start again.

Had a mate with a similar problem and the ati drivers, had something to do with the branching of X and Ati's support - his name is Radan on the forums, I will point him to this thread on the morrow.

Personally, every time I've used a SuSE distro, it's broken on me in some way, usually due to the package manager. I'd suggest ubuntu, real easy to set up.

Or if you're determined to stick with SuSE, then I believe I read somewhere that 9.3 is out, or soon to be.

        G'day!

I'm using Fedora Core 3 right now and have installed the latest ATI drivers without a problem...
I've had to wait a long time for the new drivers as the old ones didn't support X-Org's version of X-Windows.
As for Suse, I used to use it and did have 3D-Accel working on ATI's previous drivers but it was a real pain to get them to function... even now if I change my Kernel pack I have to re-compile the fglrx module every time.
So. I shall check what I had at that time with Suse and try to find the howto instructions...
But I recommend you check what version of X-Org you have running and that you have the latest ATI Drivers that are for that version, if there is a mismatch then you will have problems...

If I get really bored I think I still have Suse here and might try myself to see what's up... but no promises there! ;]

        Ta.

Okie dokie, still downloading Suse 9.2 myself so no tests yet but I found this llink which may help...

Ok, just checking to see if anyone (who uses SuSE) has had any luck getting ATI's latest video driver to work? I've got an ATI All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro

As always read everything though and be carefull...
I have killed x-windows many times trying to install ati's drivers so backup your /etc/X11/xorg,conf file!!!

Will check back when I get more info...

          Ta!

Too be honest since the OS thinks the drivers are neither installed or not uninstalled it maybe easier and quicker too start afresh.

Try to use the "suse" way of installing the ATI drivers and try to only use the suse packaged driver...I have used the ATI orig but it breaks things for use screen config tools. If you you use the ati provided drivers do *NOT* click that little check box that says accelerate 3d

The very latest suse 9.2 and ati driver were hardlocking my machine every time, but when I pulled out my 8500 and put my 9600pro in it worked perfectly(no changes to config). ATI drivers are very finicky at best and suse is starting to really irritate me. Luckily I only run my second machine on suse, my main machine gets the all the goodness that mandrake 10.1 and nvidia (6800gt) can provide

edit and to repair that canot install becasue it is installed krap, do a rpm -r --nodeps with no gui running and then use the "suse way"

                Hi!

When I did have ATI Drivers working with 3D under Suse I did not use the yast thingy, basically ignored it totally as far as the video hardware goes.. and since ATI's 3D drivers are propriatry drivers then getting suse to package it into their format is probably wishfull thinking...
Still yet to attempt to install the new ati drivers on suse myself...
But as long as you don't bother to use yast then it should work.
Use the fglrxconfig to configure it and after restart check with the fglrxinfo tool...
If fglrxinfo still reports MESA and not the ATI driver then you have a compile or agpgart failure... try to compile fglrx module manually and also check with lsmod as to if the modules are being loaded...

will report back more and can also get into specific instructions if needed...

                Ta!

Had to use yast to install the rpms as that was the only way it would remove the previous version and then actually installer the newer one. Never had a problem before from the command line.

Interesting you said use the fglrxconfig as most people say don't use that for Suse.

                    Ok, Works!
                    I have system:
                    AMD AthlonXP-2400+ on a MSI Nforce2 mobo 1Gb ram....
                    Powercolor ATI Radeon 9600XP 256Mb

Fresh install of Suse 9.2 with standard kde install
Ran yast to install Linux Source and gcc packages...
in a Root console ran "init 3" to kill x-win and go to console.
                    ran "rpm -Uvh --force fglrx_6_8_0-8.10.19-1.i386.rpm"
ran "fglrxconfig" and answered all q's including yes to use external agp module as the nForce2 mobo requires this....
                    rebooted
                    works sweet....
                    fglrxinfo gives:
                    "------
                    radan@radans:~> fglrxinfo
                    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic
                    OpenGL version string: 1.3.4893 (X4.3.0-8.10.19)
                    -------"
fgl_glxgears runs at about 350fps in it's std window size...
GL-117 runs nice and smooth, reports about 30+ fps...
                    So there you go...
Use ati's latest drivers for x-org and don't use yast to install them...

Feel free to ask me further, hope you get it working.
                    Ta for now!

You didn't install the modules then ???

I followed the instructions on Suses ftp server.

Doing it that way breaks Suses display configuration tools, it does work but can cause pain when going to newer versions.

In order to get do it properly get the suse version of the drivers and use their rather long winded version.
use this verision and read the readme

                        ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup...fglrx/8.10.19/

                            G'day again...

That link I notice is for AMD64... this link is for i586 arch type...
                            ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup...fglrx/8.10.19/

Yes my way does break some of YAST's display features but hey, it's easy and more importantly, it works...
What can I say, as always with Linux, everyone has their own way of doing things, this is what currently defines Linux... you want propriety software you have to pay for it...
I have the ATI drivers working nicely under both SUSE 9.2 and Fedora Core 3 right here.
I shall download suse's packs to try since this install was for testing only... see what goes..

                            ttfn! :]

So basically when the install is borked theres no quick way back. Time to re-install.
