  • Hey there - returning to linux

    Hey guys

I have been away form Linux for a bit and want to return.

Any recommendations for a revisit? Its going o my older PC, A Nforce AMD 18000 with 1 GB ram, about 280 gb of storage on 3 ide drives (it was my samba media store before).

    I have played with
    Ubunto (liked it)
    Mandrake (liked it too)
    and an ancient RH. ?7

can you suggest a Gnome which should install without too much pain? I was going to go Ubunto again (I quite like the debian accesibility), but I read here before that it wasnt well maintained.....

    Regards

not tried Ubuntu, though some quite like it.
I much prefer SuSE, I think it really comes down to personal choice between the two.

I'm a very happy Gentoo user, but in your case I'd just go with Ubuntu.

I personally, like Sasq, prefer SUSE.

You've probably read that Ubunto is having a time keeping their included packages maintained. This is due to a limited number of package maintainers and, well, a glut of packages.

Yeah I am a fan of suse as well, it really has progressed well

My old favourite Mandrake, now called Mandriva has gone to the dogs quite a bit, they even fire the guy who originally created the distro

Used to be a Mandrake user myself, but even before the merger with Connectiva it was starting to become something less than usable.

Same here. Switched over to Suse ever since Mandriva 2005 came out.
