  • Gnome Shell

So far my experience is very positive. Yes, many things to fix, but I generally prefer it to my previous compiz desktop.
    Well worth a try!

Okay, so after over two weeks of using Gnome-Shell exclusively, I'm not going back. I just love it, even with all the minor shortcomings. It's simple, it's practic, it's very intuitive and it 'feels' right.

Somehow, I tend to prefer KDE...
But it may be because I've worked the most with those shells (it was the default configuration at work). Haven't really tried Gnome for enough time to basically have an unbiased choice.

Piqued my curiosity, so I installed it on Ubuntu 9.10
My first impression is that it is Fluxbox turned inside-out.
I'll play around with it some more...

Still using it. Nothing as flashy as Compiz or KDE but so much more useful. There are quite a few shortcomings which I hope get fixed till Spetember (estimated release day) but it's my best Desktop experience so far.

            What exactly is "Gnome SHELL"?

It's a funny name for the gnome 3.0 desktop.

First image is what you see when you click 'Activities', hit the top right corner or press the 'super' (Start) button on your keyboard. Second one is just an empty desktop..

edit: Added another screen shot with the control center, Firefox, calendar and the 'system menu' opened.

at 0:16-0:17 I see visible tearing in the video of the second link. Is Vsync disabled in Gnome Shell with 3D effects? Or is this an artefact of the method used to capture this video?

I didn't play with the 3D settings or anything. I don't get any artifacts or tears here (Geforce 9500gt) but I do get the occasional black-flash of the screen in the latest versions. Happens mostly when there's a system message pop up and the like.
Otherwise, the overall usefulness beats the quirks.

Glad to see that Gnome has stepped it up.
