  • Introducing the SteveMark2001!

    Hi guys,

I've been doing a bit of benchmarking with various graphics cards for a local computer shop where I help out... here's my results:

I tested on two PCs I happened have here handy and represent a PC that a customer may be upgrading from and a PC that a customer may want to upgrade to.

Latest publicly available grpahics drivers used for each card from the respective manufacturer. Both machines ran Windows Me. Quake 3 tests had NO service packs - simply the version that's on the CD.

    Athlon 1.1Ghz - Asus A7V, Athlon Tbird 1Ghz clocked to 11x100Mhz, 256Mb RAM (At 133Mhz, CAS-3), WD 17Gb UDMA 66 drive Via 4-in-1 4.28 used, Directx8 installed.

    PII-450 - Dell Dimension XPS-T450 (Well, actually a T500 (P3), but with a PII-450 CPU), 128Mb RAM, Seagate 4.3Gb UDMA 33 drive, Directx8 installed.

The results are NOT meant to be scientific - just a guide for our customers who haven't a clue and can then see what they've got and what they can upgrade.

EDIT: Oh yeah - here's a bit more info on the cards:

    These results are subjective...

2D Image Quality: (Out of 10 - higher the better)

SiS 6326 - (When it got into windows) 5/10
    Mill G200 - 8/10
    S3 Savage 4 - 3/10
    Mill G450 - 10/10
    Ati Rage 128 - 6/10
    Mill G400 - 9.5/10
    S3 Savage2000 - 7/10
    Geforce 2 MX - 6/10
    Geforce 2 GTS - 7/10

    Memory Configs:

    SiS 6326 - 4 & 8Mb AGP tested
    Mill G200 - 8Mb SD-RAM
    S3 Savage 4 - 16Mb SD-RAM
    Mill G450 - 32MB DDR-RAM
    Ati Rage 128 - 16Mb SD-RAM (?)
    Mill G400 - 32Mb SG-RAM
    S3 Savage2000 - 64Mb SD-RAM
    Geforce 2 MX - 32MB SD-RAM
    Geforce 2 GTS - 32MB DDR-RAM

I want that Sissy card ...

    Anyways, interesting table, Stevie !

Especially the low 3D Mark 99 scores from the GTS 2 ... LOL

Seems like that card doesn't like non-T&L benchmarks ...

I noticed that your results are scaled ... what's up with that ?

    Cheers,
    Maggi

Yeah - I've scaled the results to make more modern tests more important and the older tests less important...

The Quake 3 frame rate score was boosted up quite a way to make the number more like a 3dmark result... then the older 3d marks were scaled down a bit (as it's an old benchmark) and 3dmark2000 was scaled up a bit (as it's a newer benchmark)

      The final number is:

      0.7*3dmark99 + 1.3*3dmark2000 + 40*q3640x480 + 60*q31024x768

PS: The PII-450 test with the Geforce2MX actually had different drivers (older ones - 6.35 compared to 6.50) so that's why the 3dmark99 score was better and the 3dmark2000 score was poorer on that card.. But yes, the 3dmark99 score on the Geforces is lower than the G400 MAX and Savage 2000.

PPS: I was actually surprised at the Savage2000 score as it was a 64MB card - I thought it would have performed better than it did.

PPPS: That SiS 6326 is just crap! I had a few of them - one wouldn't even boot into winme, with another, both 3dmarks said 'you ain't got no 3d card' and with the 3rd both 3dmarks wouldn't run in their proper resolution (only 640x480).

      Cheers,
      Steve

I've added a couple more (older) cards (Ati Expert 98 and Nvidia TNT1)
