I had the same prob with the dreaded "can't access codec driver" message, and I went through a ton of suggestions from matrox. They ranged from driver removal, to ulead re-install etc.....I finally formatted my c: drive and reinstalled everything. I then loaded a saved dvp project file, tried to create video and had the same message pop up. At this point I was ready to throw the computer out the window. I finally redid the project, inserting pictures, video sound etc all over again. Went to create video using mjpeg and voila it worked. Don't ask me why. I guess the dvp file may have corrupted.

      Hi Peter,

you wrote that you tried to copy the .DAT files from the CD into the ULEAD.DAT directory. After that the project settings kept changing back and wouldn't stay. I had the same and it took me two frustrating days to discover that the only problem I had was that every file from CD is READ ONLY! Change the properties for the copied file and that should fix that part of the problem.

I've seen the same 'cannot acces codec' message once. This was when I tried to crop the output file. Not using this option worked for me.

An other thing, I have not read every message in this thread completely but did you install the video tools AFTER or BEFORE you installed Media Studio? Somewhere in the manual there are a few lines that say that the video tools have to be installed AFTER Media Studio Pro. (Who reads a manual?)

If you uninstall both Media Studio and Video tools make sure you also remove the Ulead32.ini file AND the Ulead.dat directory from the Windows directory.

I found that a number of problems were solved by doing an uninstall/install routine of Media Studio Pro that usually takes only 10-15 minutes.

I hope my words are of any help.

      Greetings, Marijn

Thanks to everybody for their advice. I have now uninstalled Matrox and Media Studio, including all manual deletion of ini. Files and registry keys. I can created video files without the infuriating “cannot access codec” message.

Now I am seeking advice on achieving the best quality.

Firstly, can anybody confirm which is the correct setting for Field Options. Setting to Field Order “A” or “B” results in very jerky transitions and titles, with strange blocky artifacts over the whole frame. Also, scrubbing on the time line is very hesitant. When set to Frame-based, scrubbing is fluid, and (most) effects render beautifully, but is this correct?

I have noticed something else odd: if Media Studio Video Capture is first opened before Video Editor, even if subsequently closed, the preview image in Editor has prominent superimposed alternate magenta coloured raster scan lines, and no output to TV. Scrubbing the cursor across the time line in Editor is instantaneous.

If only Video Editor is opened, the Editor preview image has no magenta lines, but is softer in definition, and can be output to TV. Further, if only Video Editor has been opened, there is a delay of about 10 seconds every time the cursor is scrubbed: i.e. the cursor is frozen each time before being able to scrub. I have upgraded to Media Studio Pro. V5.02, and entered the line under [HardwareACC] AlwaysKeepLastFrame=1 in ulead32.ini file as recommended by Ulead, so the codec should remain open after scrubbing and the last frame stays open for quicker response. The last frame is kept in preview at the end of scrubbing, but it seems as though the codec closes every time.

Does anybody have any ideas on what is going on, and any advice.
