I've been having fun overclocking my capture setting according to the tips and tricks, one question though: Is there any possibility of heat damage, like when overclocking your chipset, or other side effects (other than massive file sizes?)
So far I was able to get 2.6:1 in 704X480 30 fps at 7.3 MB/sec without any lost frames. Going up to 9 MB/sec gave 2 distorted frames out of 300 (none lost however). I'm guessing with a little tweaking on other aspects of my system it would be possible to go higher yet (my hard drive does 13.9 reliably.)
It is changing compression parameters to values that provide more output data per frame. Specifically, quantization matrices are changed (the chip uses for complex frames the matrices, which are used for simple frames in normal mode). The whole operation is similar to setting datarate for MPEG compression - only the "software" is changed, but not a hardware.
The trick does not involve any changes in internal clock of a chip.
There is NO possibility of chip overheating, except the possible increase of heat dissipation on compressed data output internal port, because of more bytes going through it.
The job inside a chip still remains the same, only the result is different in size.
It was not working for me: even 4 MB/sec captures could produce damaged frames.
