  • Partition Magic for 98/NT g200 Marvel NLE

I bought Partion Magic because I want to try NT 4 out on the same PC I'm running Win98 for NLE. I am hoping to get better performance and stability with NT. My expectation is that I will need to configure NT to be able to R/W Fat32 and that the process of capture/edit/print may require booting into both OSes.

I tried testing PM4 out on another PC first. I got NT and Win98 to boot up, but then, all of a sudden, NT would not boot up any more. It seems I will have to reinstall NT.

The questions is: Is anyone having success with this arrangement?

    TIA

Your problem is that NT4 requires the boot partition on a dualboot system (Win9x) to be FAT16. Otherwise it can't see the partition to boot.

Actually both the Win9x and NT partitions should be FAT16 and as such have to be <2 gigs. The NT partition can also be NTFS, but then you can't see if from Win9x if things go whacky. I prefer FAT16 for that reason.

I'd probably partition the drive 3 ways with the third partition for ancillary storage.

Don't you just love Microsoft about now?

To get NT4 to see your FAT32 capture drive you need to get Winternals FAT32 Filesystem for NT4. It's $39 USD at http://www.winternals.com . This is a very stable and excellent product.

Sorry for the long post, but this is how my Drive is partioned on the test machine. I failed to mention that there is also a Win95 installed. Does this look OK?

        1. I could not see it on your postings: which boot manager system are you using? I find Boot Magic is a little hairy.

        2. You mention PM 4. Download v. 4.1 patch. I believe this addresses some NT4 problems.

        3. I use dual booting (W98/Linux) on one computer, but I put the O/Ss on different drives. I believe that, if possible, it is better to have each O/S at the start of the first partition on a drive. Just a thought.

        4. Doc, Yes my love affair is jaded. Actually, having been brought up on non-PC computers, it never really got off the ground.

I just did the PM 5.0 upgrade and it works great so far. Now all I have to do is set up a partition for Linux and....

I had all three OSes booting up fine with Boot Magic at first. I think the NT boot problem started when I changed the Boot Magic Icons for the OSes. I was in Win98, and I was showing a friend how "cool" PM is and how you can do the Soda Can thing with Boot Magic. Well, I guess changing the Icons caused BM to write to the boot record, and NT doesn't abide that. Just a suspicion.

When I get some time I would like to try Doc's suggestion to install NT in FAT16.

            I'm using:
            Partion Magic 4.01
            Boot Magic 1.01

What will I get if I move to a newer version? I'm not interested in support for any OSes other than Win9x and NT4 at this time.

Also, can I get better rendering performance and stability with my G200 Marvel under NT4?

            Thanks for your replies.

Just this Monday I tried the same in my PC. I had two primary Fat32 partitions with win98, and an extended partition with all my common files. So I used partition magic 4.0 to resize my primary partitions to make room for a third one with fat16 for NT.

Installation worked OK with no error messages, but when NT was ready for its first boot nothing happened. I spent all the day trying different setups and nothing worked. Then I moved my win98 partitions forward and setup the first one for NT and Voila! That was, NT needs to be the in the first partition to boot.

But I had one big problem: When moving my win 98 partitions PM 4.0 reported some strange error and cancelled the operation. In the next reboot that partition was garbage, all the data was lost. Scandisk reported no surface errors on the drive. I think it was some bug in PM 4, maybe version 4.1 is better. Partition magic 3 never gives me this kind of trouble, but it doesn’t support drives larger than 8 Gb.
