  • PC-VCR with G400Max Vidpres Performs Illegal Operation

I just installed Rainbow Runner G-Series with my new G400-Max on a K6-3/450 Epox MVP3G2 Motherboard. The Matrox Quick Connect worked fine for all 3 tests.
But when I tried the Matrox PC-VCR Remote, BOOM: as soon as the Splash Screen Appears I get "Vidpres This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down .."
    The details are:

VIDPRES caused an invalid page fault in
    module VIDPRES.EXE at 0187:004497ee.

Based on info from MURC I already have:
    1) Downloaded the Powerdesk Uninstaller
    2) Downloaded Powerdesk 5.25
    3) Downloaded Video Tools 5.1
    4) Downloaded the VIA 4in1 Pack
    5) Uninstalled Powerdesk and Video Tools
    6) Reinstalled Powerdesk 5.25 and Video Tools 5.1
    6) Installed the VIA 4in1 pack

But to no avail. The problem is still there.

Has any one else seen this problem?

I presently have very similar problem. A few days ago I added a Rainbow Runner Upgrade Card to my existing G400 dualhead card. After uninstalling all previous Matrox drivers I downloaded and setup Windows 9x PowerDesk 5.30 and my G400 dualhead output images to monitor 1 and monitor 2 (a tv) fine. I then downloaded and setup Windows 9x Video Tools version 1.51 (with no errors reported), but every time I run PC-VCR and select line-in or TV-in, the program crashes (although PC-VCR does let me playback old avi files). The same happens if I try running Matrox Quick Connect, the TV-out part works fine, but not the line-in (vid capture) or TV-in (tuner) bits.

Both PowerDesk 5.30 and Video Tools 1.51 ran through their setups with no errors reported, and display_settings/advance/information reports it recognises the TV-tuner and video capture hardware components.

I've resisted using the Matrox Rainbow Runner Setup CD that came with the card since this just seems to have the old drivers, which I guess I don't want on my system.

I suspect I've missed a step in the setup but I'm darned if I can figure it out. I've e-mailed steve (here at MURC) and tech-support@matroxintl.com and am still awaiting a response.

Anyone out there got any ideas???

      Hey J

I see I'm not the only one. The saga continues with my G400 DH and RR-G:

      1) I tried another complete delete of all traces of of the Powerdesk and Video tools:

      a) add/remove programs of video tools, DVD Player etc.
      b) ran Matrox unistaller to remove Display Drivers
      c) Reboot and installed the PCI VGA drivers
      d) Downloaded from MS, and ran regclean
      e) Deleted all Matrox PD*.*, mga*.*, Matrox*.* files, emptied recycle bin
      f) used regedit & searched & deleted all keys with "Matrox", "MGA", G400 Pdesk, Rainbow
      g) installed PD 5.25 from w9x_525.exe
      h) installed VT 5.1 from 9xvt151e.exe
The result: BOOM!! GPF in VIDPRES when I try to use PC-VCR (as described above).

      2) So I tried other suggestions: Set AGP to 1 - same GPF in VIDPRES.
      3) Increase AGP Aperture to 128Meg - same GPF in VIDPRES.

      3) How about installing unto a brand new Windows 98?
      a) Format C: installed minimal Windows 98
      a) installed IBM G96 monitor drivers
      b) installed 4in1 pak for VIA drivers
      c) installed PD 5.25 from w9x_525.exe
      d) installed VT 5.1 from 9xvt151e.exe

Now I get exactly the same result on my virgin 98 as J!!

      <every time I run PC-VCR and select line-in or TV-in,
<the program crashes (although PC-VCR does let me
      < playback old avi files).
<The same happens if I try running Matrox Quick Connect, the TV-out part works
<fine, but not the line-in (vid capture) or TV-in (tuner) bits.

The PC-VCR crash is the message:
"Matrox video editing hardware is currently not available. Another program may be using your Matrox video editing hardware or there may not be enough graphics memory available.
Before trying to use Matrox video editing hardware again (1) try closing any other program that maybe
Using it (for example video capture, playback or editing programs) or (2) try lowering your display resolution or color palette (a 16 color pallete is recommended)"

      The Quick Connect crash is:
      "QKCNCT
Another program may be using your Matrox video editing hardware. Only one program at a time can use Matrox video editing Hardware.
Close any other program that maybe using video editing hardware (for example video capture, playback or editing programs) then restart the program your using."

Others have had this problem as well. See Ngoshen's thread dated August 7, 1999: cupture error another program may be using your video editing hardware: http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001463.html

J are you running AMD SuperSocket 7? I notice that The release notes for PD 5.30 cryptically say that: "***Only available for Windows98, P3 and AMD K7 CPUs.***" Does this mean that it doesn't work for AMD K6?

My virgin Windows 98 system now works with G400Max and RR-G!

After booting, a Matrox utility popped up and said that my DIRECTX drivers were old, and things would run slowly. So I downloaded a copy of DIRECTX 6.1, applied it, and EUREKA!! I could capture from my video camera line-in.

Emboldened, I rebooted the "old" Windows 98 partition that had the
"Vidpres This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down .." problem, and also installed DIRECTX 6.1 (although I think it was already installed).

        NO GO.

So I can conclude that something in my software configuration on the "old" Windows 98 is SNAFU'ed. I'll look into this tomorrow. I really don't look forward to incrementally re-installing all of my existing software just to figure this out.

Couldn't Matrox build a configuration integrety checker? It would really reduce installation frustration.

Walter, I re-read the PD 5.30 release notice and I think Matrox actually mean that only "Turbo ICD" needs Win98, a P3 and a AMD K7 CPU, since the release notice actually says....

          - Turbo ICD (for G400 only) with support for:

          a) Quake 2
          b) Quake 3
          c) Half-Life
          d) Unreal

***Only available for Windows98, P3 and AMD K7 CPUs.***

The fact that you managed to get your system with a K6-3/450 Epox MVP3G2 Motherboard to finally work seems to imply that AMD K7 is only required for "Turbo ICD" - does this make sense?

I'm running Windows98 (second edition), have an Intel III processor, but am not sure if my system has an "AMD SuperSocket 7" . What exactly is it, and how do I tell if I have one?

I was interested to hear that you managed to get your system to work after downloading and applying a copy of DirectX 6.1 after installing PD 5.25 and VT 5.1 - but why are you using PD 5.25 when PD 5.30 is the latest, which Matrox seem to suggest using with VT 5.1 (I take it this is actually VT 1.51)?

Finally, you mentioned that with your "old" Windows 98 partition you tried installing DirectX 6.1 with NO GO. Did you first remove all Matrox programs/drivers/files/etc before installing DirectX 6.1, or did you just try installing DirectX 6.1 over the top? If not, maybe removing all files, then installing PD 5.25 (or perhaps 5.30) and VT 1.51 and then installing DirectX 6.1 will fix your "old" Windows 98 partition problem, since this is what you did with the virgin/brand_new Windows 98 system???

man - this is getting to be very frustrating indeed.

          Your curiously - J

Hi Walter, I just re-read your various postings (including the ones in the "Help re RR/G and G400 Millenium" thread) and note some differences between your intial problems and mine.

When you first installed your Rainbow Runner G-Series with your new G400-Max Matrox Quick Connect worked fine for all 3 tests. However, for me it only works for the "Video Output" test. When I run either the "TV Tuner" or "Video Input" test I get "Vidpres This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down...." - so it appears you had a head-start on me!!!

Not sure if this helps either of us, but I just thought it worth mentioning.
