CD-R file splitter for backing up AVIs?

Can anyone recommend a good file splitter, backup program and CD-writer combination for backing up large MJPEG AVI's across multiple CD-Rs?

There is a program called Splitter that is very clean, and works great --

I can't seem to find the URL, but maybe this info from the readme.txt file will assist you in locating the program

File Splitter is a simple file splitting and joining utility. File splitting is good for breaking a large file into smaller parts for easier storage, transportation, etc. For example, let's say you have an eight megabyte file which needs to fit onto floppies. File splitter can break the file into parts, then re-join them at a later time to recreate the original file.

To install File Splitter, just create a folder and place the executable and help files there. Create a shortcut where ever you want one, and that's it.

To uninstall, delete the files and your shortcut. File Splitter doesn't mess with your registry or anything. Just like the good old days. *wink*

Thanks for the info. I found a similar sounding program called Mastersplitter.

It works pretty well, but boy does it take a long time (and HD space).

Is there any good CD-r writing program that would split and write across multiple discs on-the-fly (to save time and space)? (Is that even possible?)

You could try slice32 at www.pcmag.com/utilities

I've used winzip to span files across several zip discs, writing directly to the zip discs. If you can set up your cd writer so it appears as a drive letter in explorer then it might work for CDRs too, though I have not tried this for CDRs myself.

Thanks I will try this. I do have packet writing software with my CD-recorder, maybe that will work.

If you have packet writing software, especially if it's Adaptecs DirectCD 2.5, then consider getting a backup program that supports multi-CDR/RW's as a medium.

Backup Plus by AVANTRIX is a definite winner here. It can do HD, file or directory backups to multiple CDs', either CDR or CDR/W. Under $40 USD. Very stable. Just remember to format the CD's before starting the backup.
