  • 16:9 format possible on RT2000

    Hi,

We have an widescreen tv at and a sony DV which can record 16:9 at home. My father is interested in The Matrox RT2000. Can the RT2000 edit this kind of format or is it restricted to 4:3 ? (if it can't: Which prosumer card can?)

Chances are, that 16:9 mode is really just pressing the video in the x-direction to fit it into a normal DV frame (720x480). If this is the case, any DV card could capture and play back the video; the difference would be in editing. You'd have to tell your software, in one way or another, that the 720x480 video you're editing really has an aspect ratio of 16:9.

For example, using MSP, I would capture the video in at 720x480 and edit it either with the preview frame size set to the correct aspect ratio or, if previewing on your wide TV (which I figure you would do with an RT2000), just use 720x480 in Video Studio and use your TV as reference for the actual frame size. Other elements (such as pictures and computer graphics) could probably be prepared at the correct aspect ratio, which when imported into Video Editor you could scale to fit 720x480. Your TV would just stretch it out again.

I don't think there's a special format of DV for widescreen; your camcorder is probably just shrinking the video like I said.

Actually SONY cuts off the top and bottom of the image to simulate 16:9. So the images are proportonatly correct. Just some info to help.
