  • How to convert MJPEG AVI to avid Format ??

    In AVID Cinema,
i looked the avid files in a project directory and i can "see" the .AVI files from the matrox...
but it's a tiny file .MOV that's used as an interface for the Matrox AVI files... ( avid uses QuickTime i think )

if i delete the .AVI files, the .MOV file generates an error when it's played: "Cannot find source files in X:\XXXX\XXX "

Is there a way to convert an .AVI file captured with a Marvel G200 TV to a format that AVID would recognise ?? ( .MOV ) ??

Does AVID Video editing Stations use the same files as AVID Cinema ?

( i captured some clips for my sister and she works with an AVID Video editing system at her school ... She wasn't able to import my matrox files...)

    Thanks for your ideas...

    Hi Migou,

I'm not entirely sure how Cinema works, but it captures into .AVI files which are encoded using the Matrox hardware MJPEG codec.

It uses Quicktime (.MOV) files internally, and then when you create your final movie it applies the editing changes that you have made to the captured .AVIs in creating the output .AVI (the input clips are unaltered).

Cinema bears no resemblance to the professional Avid products, but probably the reason that your sister can't read your .AVIs is because of the harware codec. You can change the codec used to create the output AVI to something more generic (and non-hardware dependent).

      Thanks for the response, This_Idiot

So is it enough to change the indication in the header of the .AVI
( like with the program called AVI.exe )
And use MJPG instead of dmb1 ??

( like PICVideo Codec uses )
is MJPG a "standard" for software Mjpeg ??
( as dmb1 is standard for Matrox HW Codec)

or should i encode the .AVI file with the exact same codec it will be used to decode ?

Sorry, I'm out of my depth when it comes to changing AVI headers and using 3rd party MJPEG codecs. I guess that this might be sucessful, but you would still have to ship out a copy of the 3rd party codec for your recipient to install before playing the AVI.

I was thinking more of using a more standard codec (indeo, cinepak, whatever) that comes as part of the standard windows package and is available to most windows9x users.

Try following my links page to Morgan and drop them a line asking if what you propose is OK. I'm sure that they will be helpful

I use AVID Cinema to make movies too. After I finish and save the movie in AVID Presentation format it makes a large AVI file. I then compress that file into MPG-1 format with a little encoder I got from Panasonic Digital http://www.pwi.co.jp/products/mpeg/index_e.htm
The resulting MPG is of course only a fraction of the size of the AVI and will play on most any PC. Normally MPG's made from AVI's using software encoders lose a lot of quality but I have been very impressed with the Panasoic encoder. Quality is super and I have to look closely to find any difference between the MPG and the original AVI.

Thanks dchip, i will try this pro as soon as i have time...
            ;D

This_idiot, i talked with my sister and she said that her teacher talked about MJPEG... so i'm not off-track...
I will send an MJPEG codec with the clips modified to see if it works out... i know it works fine in my system...
i asked her to maybe visit her's class AVID stations... to see how they are build.. Might be interresting..
            ;D
            Thanks again for the replys..
