"... have found that good lighting lessens the effect of darker frames during the overlay."

Don, I've found that any number of lights turned on in my editing room makes no difference with the appearance of darker frames after rendering.

Seriously though, I'm disappointed to hear that my concerns regarding rendered clips have been confirmed by you. I was actually hoping I was doing something wrong, but it appears not. It's unfortunate that rendered parts of clips turn out darker than the rest of the clip. This may not be a problem for someone who plans to eventually render the whole project to convert it to a different format, but for anyone like myself who wants to simply use cutlist editing to play back to tape, it's a disaster. I'm really disappointed.

I solved my problems by going out and buying a Canopus Raptor DV card. I run my hi-8 tapes through a Sony TR7000 digi 8 camcorder. I haven't noticed any rendered scenes darkening with it either. (I thought that the latest RRS drivers solved the darkening problem for most but not all titles, moving paths ,scene transitions-really bad with earlier drivers). I haven't noticed any evil frames either. Now, Ulead 5.2 still has its quirks with slo-mo and still-freeze images getting the "jerks" if not rendered first as frame order and than later converted to field order A but in the videos I've done so far no out of the blue jitters except when putting a 2 still images together with a sphere moving path and trying to keep it still. I finally gave up on the Rainbow Runner in order to get the next step up in quality. (I never did get rid of slight "jerks" here and there although some people claim they have.)I haven't noticed any with the Raptor yet!
