  • Doing .AVI Above 2GB

Im not sure if anyone has tried this yet but there is a program called VirtualDub which can create AVI as big as you want. I've heard of it working on the Matrox Marvel G400-TV but not sure for the RRG, try it out at:
    http://www.concentric.net/~Psilon/virtualdub.html

It uses some special OpenDML features, hopefully Matrox will learn this technology and add it into PC-VCR.

I think you're missing out on some reading.

The 2Gb "limit" is an imposition of Video For Windows (VFW). All windows software that gets around this limit creates (or replays) multiple files that are individually below this limit.

The software that Matrox supplied you with (PC-VCR) does this itself. For editing purposes you can use Uleads MediaStudio Pro (supplied with the Rainbow Runners but unfortunately not with the Marvels) to edit projects greater than 2Gb as long as no individual clip is greater than 2Gb

      I agree with Phire

Yep, it does seem that it can do past 2 gig capture in one file. The old version I got at home does indeed divide the capture into files below 2 gig.

Now, all that is left is to get home, as soon as possible an try it out.

        Hold the phone guys....

VirtualDub DOES have promise, but it's still not ready for prime-time.

The current build (7713) has a major bug (VB's authors term here) in its OpenDML support that limits it's captures to 4 gigs in Win98. Apparently it does work in NT4, but only if you use NTFS and apply NTFS compression to the drive.

The OpenDML bug is supposed to be fixed in the "next release", build 8012, but the news item to that affect has been on the site since November 8, 1999.

AFAIK, the reason why 4GB capture is the limit in Win98 is because the FAT32 file system will not hold files larger than 4GB. It's a limitation within the filesystem, which NTFS does not have (during the right circumstances) and thus it will never be possible to make beyond 4GB captures into one file with Win98.

Just corrected a minor spelling error
