Jerry: Editing in VS4 is unaffected by whether the camcorder is linked and hot, or completely off line. The little preview window in the middle of the UI behaves the same either way: playbacks look like about 15fps.
The codec used by VideoStudio is referred to in the 'make movie' compression drop down list as 'DV Video Encoder', and is distinct from the Adaptec DVSoft, further down the list. In my Windows control panel 'multimedia' devices tab, under 'video compression codecs', I've got the following list:
Cinepak
Duck TrueMotion
DVSoft
Indeo video 5.06
Indeo video interactive R4.4
Indeo video R3.2 (twice!)
Microsoft H.263 video
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video V1
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video V2
Microsoft UYVY Video Decompressor
RLE
RRIcm (dmb1)
VDOnet VDOwave Video
Video 1
Vivo H.263 Video version 2.0.0
I really can't tell which (if any) of these is the "DV Video Encoder" that VS4 actually uses when I encode for playback out the 1394 line. I'll poke around with each of the ones available in MSP sometime, and see what kind of options are available in them, if you want.
In VS4, though, I've only used that 'DV Video Encoder', MPEG-4, and also the Matrox MJPEG, just to see how that one came out (not bad).
