  • Output quality - Premiere vs Media Studio Pro

Can some explain which produces better
quality output? The reason I'm asking is
that Media Studio has a feature where only
    the transitions/effects are re-rendered.

Does this mean that the video that is
unchanged simply get's copied byte for byte
    to the output AVI?

What is the recommended "Video Setting" when
setting up the "Project Settings" in Premiere? I assume it is Matrox MJPEG (for
those that don't have the space for uncompressed video). If so, does this mean
that any finished video produced by Premiere
will always be at least a second-generation
MJPEG with reduced video quality whereas with Media Studio, the unchanged video within the output will have the original first-generation quality?

You're right about the "Smart Render"
    feature being included in Ulead's
MediaStudio Pro 5.2. Yes... it preserves
quality by pointing to your original,
    captured file without re-rendering.

But Premiere is also supposed to have a
    similar ability.

Having said that - I prefer MediaStudio Pro:

Ulead MediaStudio Pro has *great* plug-in support:

Ulead MediaStudio Pro is supported by training resources:

When you say Premiere is supposed to have
the similar ability, where do you set this
      (if it is not default)?

I have both Premiere 5.1C and MSPro 5.2 on my system. MSPro is definitely the more stable and easier to use product. As has already been mentioned MSPro has great plugin support as well.

IMHO even with the latest Premiere update is somewhat buggy, slow and in general a pain to use.

Premiere can do smart rendering, but it works much better & smoother in MSPro. To make Premiere do it's version of a smart render go to File/Export/Movie/Settings and de-select "Recompress".

While there also confirm the correct codec ("compressor" in Premiere-ese), frame rate, resolution and other settings are selected to match your source clips. This will prevent recompression of unchanged frames by accident ;-)

There's one *heck* of a good deal
going on right now on the Egghead
auction site. The version 5.0 CD of
          Ulead MediaStudio Pro.

          I saw a ridiculously low $99 price...
          no joke!

P.S. If you get the version 5.0 CD,
you would then be wise to download
            the free upgrade to 5.2:

Can the Premiere 5.1 coexist with the MSP 5.2 without conflicts?

I had Premiere LE on my computer with
                MediaStudio with no conflicts.

Yes, they can coexist. I have Premiere and MediaStudio Pro on my machine right now. Just make sure both versions support the same version of Quicktime if you're going to use it.

I am wondering how does MSPRO work better for smart rendering than premiere? both do the same thing - copy bytes unchanged. What is "better"?

Premiere (I am still using 4.2, which is still more stable for me than both 5.1 and MSPRO) has one major advantage - you can deselect "recompress - always" and it will smart render all movie parts that are unchanged and have same codec and size.

For example, you decide to append one file with say MS mpeg4 v2 codec to another, each file made with different compression settings, but has same frame dimension and codec. Premiere simply copies data from both files into one file. Mspro start recompression of one file with compression settings of another (in the best case). To use smart rendering in MSPRO, you have to write exactly what parameters were used while you made this piece of video, and place them in compression options.
Premiere ignores compression settings for unchanged parts of video, and applies these setting only for modified parts.
Thus with premiere you can make a movie from several highly compressed files and set increased quality of (re)-compression for transitions. So, the transition between two compressed fragments will look fine because of higher datarate, but total datarate is not changed noticeably.

I used to launch MSPRO only for its ability to make mp3 compressed audio in my mpeg4 movies. Premiere cannot use this codec. However, every time I decide to compress only audio, I have to remind all compression settings for video that were used in Premiere before.

Thank my friends for advice. Just now I have the 5.1 but waiting to get the MPS 5.2 to test.
                        Sorry for the empty message...
