  • RRG is a no go...

I just bought a rainbow runner card and a G400 32 mb. I attached both ribbon cables to the cards, and was very careful to seat both cards. While the G400 is working OK, quick connect tells me the RRG is not well connected. But it seems to be...

I installed the RRG in the 2nd PCI slot under the AGP. Could this be the problem? My system is a BP6 with dual celerons366's and 160 mb or ram. I also have a SBLive in PCI slot 4 and a USR 56K modem in ISA 1.
Hoping its not a bad card...

Given the error message you probably should doublecheck the cable connections. You never know....

As for the slot you should put the RRG in PCI-1 since on most mainboards this shares an IRQ with the AGP slot and the G400/RR-G WANT to do that anyhow. Putting the RR-G in slot 2 will usually force it to another IRQ and who knows what that'll do.

Another issue could be leftover registry entries from the previous display card. If you're up to using Regedit you might want to search for any entries from that cards maker in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/ and delete them.

Downloading and running RegClean might not be a bad idea either.

      Dual Celerons ?

Presumably you are trying to use NT then. This isn't currently supported.

Try dropping a processor and using W9x

Boul: Two problems here. As This_Idiot points out, the G400/RRG under NT isn't yet supported, so until new drivers come out, you're going to have to use win9x. The other problem most likely is your power supply. Try swapping it for an ATX 2.01 compliant one. Believe it or not, there's a big problem with all Abit boards and RRGs. (I had the same problem with my BP6)

Oh brother....I missed that dualie thing totally. Jezzz..

Yeah, NT4 is a nonstarter for the RRG at the present.

Well silly me , it seems the RRG wants its IRQs assigned by win98, not by the bios. So I had to switch the "PNP OS" option to yes in my BP6 bios. Now the card exists(woohoo).

Of course, now I have a problem in NT (dual boot system), as it is not a PNP OS...Modem quit working. Is there any way to assign IRQ's manually or by the BIOS so the RRG will be recognized by Win98 and my NT hardware profile won't be screwed up? I'd hate to go play in the bios every time I want to use NT...

Makes you hope win2K won't be a dud...

BTW thanks for your swift assistance and please bare with me, as i know just enough about this to ask incomplete questions...

Boul: The BP6 allows you to manually assign IRQs to the devices in the BIOS. I don't have my manual handy, but it's documented in there. (do note: there are only 4 irqs you can assign to AGP/PCI/U66 devices... and NT almost never likes sharing)

                Ummm guys

RR-G doesn't use an IRQ. In BIOS... set that PCI slot to auto IRQ... and everything will be A O K.
