IEEE-1394 is NOT just for DV and suchlike. It is a long-standing general high-speed serial interface system developed for communications apps. The use of it for DV is only incidental, as being eminently suitable. As he has done many times in the past, if William Jefferson Gates Junior lays his hands on it, he'll extract those parts of the standard which suit him and to hell with all those who use the standard for what it was originally intended for. Don't believe me? Look at MPEG4: MS has issued 3 codecs (maybe more, now), none of which conforms to the standard.

Incidentally, I hope everyone noticed the words "general manager of Hardware Strategy and Evangelism at Microsoft" in the article. I always thought BG took himself for God: now he has evangelists preaching the Gospel according to Bill. However, there is a difference: the real God answers one's prayers much more often than the pseudo-one from Redmond.
