  • Is this a cheap power supply?

Geez, I spent 6 months researching all my hardware, to make sure I was getting primo stuff, but I still got the shaft. Who knew there was more than wattage to power supply?

I even researched the case (Aopen Hx08 full tower) and was reassured when I saw it sported a 300W power supply. Now it turns out the Aopen PS is a piece of crap, cause I can't get the magic 0.5A at -5V to get my rainbow runner detected (notice I did not say working...)

Of all the people who had to change their PS to get their RR-G working, were they all Aopen? So far I've looked at 3 cheapo brands (250W) and they ALL have 0.5A at -5V. So did I get the only PS that doesn't work with the rainbow runner?

I don't have a RR-G but one of my previous cases had one that popped after just 4 months. The one that followed it had such bad fluctuations in it's output it was gone in a week.

It seems that there is no such thing as manufacturing standards when it comes to power supplies.

I have to agree with DrMordid. All of my power supplies have been no-namers (well.. except for a InWin 235watter, which I haven't yet tested with a RRG as I now have a Marvel) and the ability for a RRG to be detected on a Abit board seems to be fairly random. Though I've never seen a power supply that would prevent an ASUS board from detecting a RRG.

Well thats what i thought, until some guy with a P2B board told me he was having the same problems as I was. So "undetection" of the RR-G does not seem exclusive to ABIT boards. So far, we have contenders with INTEL and MSI boards. Any takers for EPOX and SOYO?

This is getting worse by the minute...

Boul: Well I can't speak for the guy with the P2B board, but my RRG was perfectly fine on a ASUS P5A board and generic 250Watt power supply. When I moved to an Abit PB6, I suddenly had the non-detected RRG problems. As soon as I switched over to another generic 300 Watt PS, the problems went away with the Abit board. I guess the person you were talking with had an odd-ball Asus board. However, judging from my own experience and from reading others posts on here, Abits seem to be the most likely to fail with a RRG.
