  • capturing and codecs

okay, i've been reading limitless crap about the matrox mjpeg codec. You guys have all said stuff about using other codecs and such. However, isn't the matrox codec some kind of hardware compression/decompression (sorry if i'm wrong, it's been a long time since i read the features of the card). So by using another codec, wouldn't that kinda defeat the purpose of using that nice matrox card? you could pretty much do it with some other card with software encoding. In addition, with these other codecs (i currently am a picvideo user) is it possible to capture directly to mjpeg (.avi) format? With my ati all-in-wonder, i gotta capture it with their stuff first, then re-encode with the picvideo.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, are the problems with the black and white files just something with the current driver??

Well firstly the Matrox MJpeg codec isn't a heap of crap. I've been using it daily for the last two years.

Yes, some people are experiencing problems when using the latest drivers with the G400 and RR combination although the G400 Marvel seems OK. Using a software codec can help out if you are stuck in this position.

And since Matrox doesn't offer capture support under NT, if you want to edit under NT you need to use a software codec.

    Hope this helps
