  • So I'm lazy! Ulead VideoStudio MPEG2 question.

I downloaded the trial version of Ulead's VideoStudio.

My primary need was a cheap MPEG2 editor. VideoStudio appears to fullfill that need.

Then I was thinking (always dangerous!), can the Matrox G200 Marvel be used with the VideoStudio software to capture video as MPEG2?

I can't find an easy answer to that question. Could someone help me out?

    Jack,

You'll probably find that lots of devices can capture MPEG2 in software given the right set of capture apps and codecs. Don't start expecting top quality out of it though. The G200 Marvel has a hardware MJPEG capture chip onboard, so capturing AVI's with an MJPEG codec is hardware assisted. Anything else is pure software.

      Chris,

I had a few moments last night to experiment. I was able to initiate an MPEG2 capture with VideoStudio, full screen. Captured 10 seconds full screen MPEG2. But the playback was jerky and the sound was out of synch. I think those problems were most likely the Maxtor IDE drives not up to the task.

The VideoStudio editing it apears is limited to trimming the beginning or end of a clip. But I was mainly interested in stitching together Ligos encoded MPEG2 (from Matrox MJPEG) clips anyway.

Wish I had more time to experiment!

Yes, it sounds as if you're bottlenecking somewhere. I think you'll be better off capturing and editing in MJPEG and then X-coding as the last step.

Either that or you'll have to buy a hardware MPEG2 capture/editing device.
