  • Garbled colors in Premiere 5.1a then Black and White

I'm running Premiere 5.1a. I have a G200, a G400 MultiHead and a Rainbow Runner G series. Everything works fine with the G200 and the RRG. With the G400 (Running with 5.25 or 5.30 drivers) and 1.51 of the Video tools, Premiere dissplays half of the video clip in the timeline window OK, then a couple frames with completely corrupt colors, then the rest black and white. If I try and navigate through the timeline, Premiere crashes in RRIcm.dll or RRIcmext.dll. If I change the DMB1 codec in the system.ini file to be m3jpeg32.dll (Which I have), everything works fine, except I get no video output to the TV out like I would with the RRIcm.dll

Any clues on this one? I've used the uninstaller several times, and no change. Remember, everything works fine if I use my G200 and the same software and the same RRG series board.

    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,

that sounds really strange and I have no idea how to solve it.
But could you please give us some more information about your system ?
    Are you a PAL or NTSC-user ?
Which capture-resolution did you use ?
Do you have those corrupted frames in other resolutions too ?

    Bye, Uwe.

I'm running NTSC, and are doing 29.97 fps at 352x240. The system is a Pentium III-500 with 256 MB of RAM. The drive I'm using for IO get around 8 MB/sec with Matrox's benchmark utility.

I'm pretty sure I'm not underspeced hardware wise, and besides, the Mystique G200 works just fine (It has a dedicated video output, which works well)

I'd stay with the G200, but the G400 has much faster dot clock (I run at 1600x1200x16 on a Sony 21") and looks much clearer. Also, the G400 has the DVD/Zoom feature which will play any video I open in Media Player, RealPlayer etc on the TV. All that stuff works fine.

Well, now I'm really stumped. Today I put my Mystique G200 back in, and uninstalled all the old software, installed 4.33m of powerdesk and 1.21 of the Video tools, and I've still got corrupt video in the Premiere timeline. Arrrrrgh!

Now I can't even back out to the previously working configuration.

Do you have the corrupted frames if you use 704x480 resolution too ?

          Bye, Uwe.

Yes, does it at 704x480 too.

I've also figured out that the problem is happening during record. When I record with 5.25 or 5.30 driver and 1.51 of the Video Tools, whenever a frame is dropped (Which shouldn't have happened in the first place) the output video stream is corrupted. I'll switch my G200 back in and see if recordings work again, but I suspect they will.

Currently I own a G400 MAX Dualhead and a Rainbow Runner G and I have the same problem when I try to capture any video using the hardware MJPEG compression. I use the latest videodrivers 5.30 and videotools 1.51. I capture PAL 352x288 videostreams using the capture remote control from matrox itself. The overlay picture is perfect and stays perfect during capturing but after usually 15 seconds the avi becomes corrupt (weird colors, wrong mjpeg quantization vectors, green picture) and although it sometimes can be played back with media player using the hardware mjpeg decompressor it can't be edited with any program (premiere, avid) and crashes the program. I tried a software decompressor, no luck either, the avi is really corrupt. I tried different capture programs (avi_io, reelcap) with the same problems in the avi. I thought that the RRG was broke and replaced my G400 with a G200 Mil. and suddenly everything worked fine. No AVI was corrupt. This smells like a serious driver problem. When putting back in my G400 the problem returned. I reinstalled a clean win98 to eliminate program interference, no luck.

This is all done using the hardware mjpeg compressor but I found out that when you using the RGB raw output the captures are perfect. Right now I use reelcap to capture raw RGB data and a software mjpeg compressor (PICVIDEO) to make my avis. It works but my CPU is really busy with it. Can't do anything else. I can capture again now but this is not what I had in mind buying the Rainbow Runner G. A big dissapointment after using a G200 marvel for a few years.

I noticed that avi_io and reelcap can also show a preview window instead of an overlay window. This preview window shows the compressed/decompressed data from the RRG to the MJPEG directly to the screen. Using this mode you can actually see what is going wrong. After 15 secs the picture usually scrambles and goes black and white. Then after a while it becomes normal again, then scrambled, and so on. I played with the forward and backward buttons on my VCR to send a messy picture to the RRG and found out that this usually turns a scrambled picture back to normal state (but not for long). I still can't figure out what is going wrong exactly. I underclocked the G400MAX to 100 instead of 300, no difference, tried 16 bit 640x480 resolution, no luck, tried to cool the RRG, nothing.

Any ideas or suggestions? Otherwise I really have to bug matrox about it. Especially now it looks like I'm not the only one.

                  Hi ppl,

I have exactly the same prob
                  g400 32meg dh, sblive, abit bh6 , 128 megs
                  p2 350 ibm 8.4 hard drive

So i'm encoding in b/w at the mo

                  i use the 5.30 and 1.51 drivers

after about 10 sec into capture colours go crazy and then its b/w all the way!

is it a hardware or driver issue?

as i have a g200 i'm gonna pop it in my system and try that!
bit of a backward step methinks

                  any ideas?

                    Hi, im having nightmares to
but with Media Studio Pro 5.2
capturing is fine, i always use the matrox remote, and capture at 704x576
but when i come to trim the files, in MSP
the scratchpad starts to play then holds one frame as its image while the sound continues.
the file plays back normally on my tv while this is happening however.

once the file is played through, control is regained. and i can usually maniuplate the clip to satisfaction. occaisionally it happens again.

but if you only want 5 seconds of a 3 minute capture, you have to play it through then trim it and it takes far longer then it should

its turning what used to be an enjoyable experince into something very tedious

i am running a Marvel G400 (old marvel G200 had no problem)
                    on W98 SE

if this is a direct draw thing, could it be related to the problems your experiencing?

                    anyone else out there suffering?

                      Same exact problem. G400+RR-G. 5.30+1.51VT.

10 seconds into the AVI, the colors flash rainbow, then go out. Then they'll come back again, then go out again.

At least i'm not the only one having this problem, however it does look like nobody's heard anything from Matrox on solving it.

                      Haig? Anyone? ANYONEE!!!!? heh..

My RR-G has NEVER worked right really :\

                          ruud vd merkt,

I had similiar problems with my G400-TV. The problem is with the supplied Matrox codec which is rumoured to be fixed in an upcoming driver release of the tools.

I tried a third party codec rather than the Matrox one and I now have no problems with colour switching while encoding or editing.

You can get the "Morgan" codec at: http://www.morgan-multimedia.com

The cost is $25. It was easy to install. Just comment out the VIDC=RRICM.DLL and add the morgan codec to your system.ini file and copy the M3JPEG32.DLL file to your Windows/System directory.

The quality of the capture seems better too...

                          Cheers, Chuck

i have the same problem with marvel g400tv and I'm very very happy to hear you guys have the problem too. :-)

I'm going to try the advised codec.

i hope matrox will fix this very annoying bug!!!

I had a crazy day today, all day i was grabbing video, improving hdd transfer rate, etc. in order to get 0 dropped frames, bvecause I thought this was causeing the colors to turn b&w. Nothing helped, all different encoders i tried, ./.. oh, crazy day
