  • DvD on a org. Rainbow Runner Studio ? can it be done

    Hi All,

I have the Original RR mystique 4mb. It's either a 220 or reg Mystique card my ? is I remember seeing somethig about be able to conect a DvD player/Drive to this card (studio.
    Can it be done?
    How? anyone?
can any be used I would like to be able to play it out to my big screen TV. I know that Dvd is Mpeg2 and RR is MJpeg so this must mean then that even if I could I wouldn't be able to watch it on my TV set.
Any recomedations for a good reliable Drive on the lighter $ area. I found one for around ~69.00 6x4x4x
    Thanks

    Hi Cut ter,

In theory, you should be able to use a DVD drive and a software DVD player program with just about any video card. The old Mystique 220 is certainly not going to provide any kind of acceleration for DVD playback. So it would really be up to your processor as to whether or not your machine can handle it. Do you have at least a 400 MHz PII?

If you enable the "Desktop TV-Out" option on your RR, and then play the DVD in "full screen" mode, you should be able to play it out to your big screen TV. This is what I do with my Marvel G-200 and it works quite well.

I have a Digital Research (?) 6x DVD-ROM drive I bought at Best Buy for $69, with a $20 mail in rebate. I am happy with it.

Indeed it can be done through software. But you will have a difficult time using a video card that doesn't support overlays. (the Mystique) As far as I know the only software DVD player that will work without overlays is the Xing DVD player, which is a bit rough compared to the alternatives but it should get the job done. Be aware however that the requirements for software DVD decoding are pretty steep and you'll want a very fast computer (P2-350, K6-2 400)

On the other hand if you are considering getting serious about watching DVDs through your computer or it isn't very fast. You should be able to get a decent hardware dvd decoder card for around 70$. Which would enable you to play DVDs without dropping any frames on a relatively slow computer.

        Hi Cut ter,

I'm not sure what DVD player you are referring too. I have a "Digital Research" brand 6x DVD Drive which I bought at Best Buy for $69, and I get a $20 rebate, so it really only ended up costing me $49! I think it works fine.
