    Hi Guys,

I did follow some logic (my own) with setting the read-ahead to full, but if you are still experiencing problems after using all the others - set it to none, to see if it makes a difference.

Swap file, Never, ever, in no case, don't even think about it - do not put the swap file on the same physical drive into which you are capturing or using for playback.

Letting the swapfile reside on the system drive is ok, putting it to yet another physical drive (slave to system drive) is even better.

When your Winwhatever is optimized, the swapfile doesn't play that big a role anymore, but you do not want it to steal the heads while you are trying to use the same heads for writing/reading an AVI.

      Hi Pertti,

You know, the "read ahead" to full could be helpfull too your right, I think it's a matter of trying both settings to see what happens.

Pertti, what about "the typical role of this machine setting", what would you choose Network Server or Desktop and why and does it help for capture/playback?

      Thanks,
      Elie

Elie, your question has already been half answered in Pertti's first post. He has chosen Network server. However....

What about those of us who are running Cacheman? The Cacheman settings become another one of the options in respect to Typical role of this computer, along with Desktop computer and Network server. Does anyone have any comments on the settings in Cacheman and how they should be set for an "optimized" NLE computer?

          Hi Guys,

I have chosen "Network Server", since it appears to reduce the overall background disk activity.

The HD:s being pedestrians compared to other components in the system, you don't want to access them unless it is absolutely necessary.

There is a short description on Desktop vs Server on the W95 CD, it can be found in ".\Admin\reskit\helpfile\win95rk.hlp".

Basically using Network Server improves filesystem multitasking.
