  • Anybody tried software MPEG2 capture with marvel/RRG?

Has anybody tried to capture real-time software MPEG2-capture with marvel/RRG?

    Which software?
    How much CPU-power is required?
Whats the quality/filesize compared to Ligos?

MPEG2 software capture in reeltime? sorry, cant be. MPEG2 is too intense for software compresison in reeltime with the existing CPU's. Your only hope for that is hardware assisted compression, or MJPEG capture and then re-encoding it. Some boards out there claim to be MPEG2 compresison, but they run low res and are really subsets off MPEG.

Well, the ATI-all in wonder is apparently able to do it!

If you don't belive it, check this link: http://www.tomshardware.com/video/99...deo-in-22.html

The ATI does it all in software, ibp-frames, with a PIII, so the Marvel/RRG must be able to do it as well!?

        Hi there,

Well i did read Tom's review, he said you need a P3-550 minimum to capture at full TV resolution, so to be honest, if you wanted to capture at full res, and you have a slower cpu than the minimum requirements, then you may as well add the cost of an upgraded cpu to the cost of the ATI!

To be honest, i'm very suprised the Marvel G400 came second to the ATI, i think that was because MJPEG takes a lot more space on your hard disk ?

I'd like to see if the ATI could do looooonnnng captures :O)

What software will do mpeg2 editing (apart from VidioStudio v4, right ?)

Using IBP-frames, editing an MPEG2 stream is a no-go. There's just not a nice, friendly way to do it. Oh, sure, you could create MPEG-2 streams made purely of I-frames, and then there's software to edit those, but since every frame is now its own separate picture, you might as well have bought a Matrox card and used MJPEG instead, converting it later to MPEG-2. (Or, better yet, a DV card and convert your captured video to MPEG-2!)

I'm not saying that ATI-AIW is better than Marvel or anything like that. Im just asking the question:

Direct MPEG2-capture must be possible with marvel/RRG (as it is on ATI), has anybody tried it?

Computer Video just did a review of the ATI AIW 128 and Voodoo TV3500. The latter seemed to be a disaster, so I won't muddy the waters by dragging in another variable.

The capure "wizard" informed them that at least a 400PII would be required before even attempting MPEG2 capture. Things get a bit confused here, as they couldn't capture audio and eventually tried capturing AVI, MPEG1 and MPEG2. At any rate, the editing package utilised was VideowaveII.

According to MGI's own explanation of VideoWaveII, it doesn't offer editing support for MPEG2 although it does for MPEG1. It also packages a stunning 9 transitions.

I'm afraid that the simple answer is still that there is no way of capturing full quality video and editing it without a dedicated hardware process to back you up. With the way that processor speeds are developing, it may be that this won't be the story for long, but we aren't there yet. In fact most folks are still struggling to get hardware solutions to provide optimum solutions on a 100% basis.

I looked at an ATI or Voodoo3500 solution for mpeg2 capture.

Yes, they encode mpeg2 - at 352x288 or thereabouts!!! (take a look at their tech-spec on respective websites)
