Based on what I've read and heard,
the DV "real time" support is missing
        in the Premiere supported products
        as well.

Actually Jerry, Premiere does support DV and Mpeg-2 in real-time.

It ships with DV500/DC1000 and the Matrox Digisuite/DTV & RT2K.

If Ulead want's to stay competitive they must also include DV support in the SDK for cards based on C-Cube to be able to playback and capture both formats.

This is just the beginning however so lets see what happens, I really like Ulead's new interface and I'm hoping they do something about the above.

          Regards,
          Elie

            Actually, Elie, you must've missed
Eric's post about the DV500, which
is **advertised** as a "REAL TIME"
            product---but isn't.

            Here is what Eric posted:

            >DVRaptor beats DV500
            >on rendering speed...

            >Nearly NOTHING is realtime
            >with the DV500: BorisFX needs

            >needs rendering, several
            >"spontanuous" crashes of

The Matrox Web site states the DV500
              by Pinnacle---using Premiere---is
              not capable of MPEG-2 editing.

In addition, I have read posts from
those who have tested RT2000... and
some of those posts indicate the
DV is *not* real time. (But the
Matrox Web site states it *is.*)

No, I did see that post and did reply to him at one point.

In order to get real-time playback you have to follow the RT formula.
Even Avids and most expensive real-time cards cannot playback third party effects or transitions without having to render.

This snippet is from the Matrox FAQ's on their web site..

                --------------------------------------------
What can I do in real time? How many video layers are supported?

The Matrox RT2000 lets you work with 3 layers (or tracks) in real time - 2 video clips and 1 graphics layer, in either DV or MPEG-2 format. The graphics layer can be positioned at any point in the three-layer stack. You are not restricted to keeping the graphics on top. You can add realtime 2D and 3D effects, including page curls, perspective, slides, organic wipes, pushes, picture-in-picture (PIP), fly in/out and much more. These effects can be used in Adobe Premiere as transitions or as filters, and can be applied on video or graphics.

You can apply one transition or filter, plus one fade, and a graphics overlay in realtime. If you insert more layers or apply more filters, RT2000 will use its accelerated multi-layer compositing engine to render that particular segment.

What titling features are supported in real time?
Matrox RT2000 plays back 32-bit TGA graphics with alpha channel in real time. You can also add 3D shadows with adjustable transparency and color in real time. A 2D DVE can be applied to titles to do single-page credit rolls in real time. A 3D DVE can be applied to fly titles in and out in real time.

I see what you mean Jerry,

To output back to a digital media i.e DV camcorder isn't supported in DV500 I agree, if that's what your saying then yes your absolutely right.
Don't know about the RT2000, best to check out the FAQ's on the Matrox web page for more info.

But as I understand it, if you capture via 1394 and insert into timeline and add a couple of RT effects would't the DV500 playback in realtime??? IF not shame on Pinnacle

                  Regards,
                  Elie

At any rate Jerry, Ulead isn't gonna stop at strictly supporting Mpeg-2 in realtime I bet you anything.

                    Cheers,
                    Elie

Actually, I'm not sure I agree
with what is suggested by your
                      statement:

                      >Even Avids and most
                      >expensive real-time
                      >cards cannot playback
                      >third party effects
                      >or transitions without
                      >having to render.

If it were a choice between RT2000
                      and the Pinnacle DV500---I would
                      definitely go with RT2000.

However, if it were a choice between
the Canopus DVRexRT and the RT2000,
I would go with the DVRexRT.

                      >colorization and posterization
                      >and real-time picture-in-picture
                      >effects. In addition to
                      >real-time video tools RT
                      >also offers a wide variety
                      >of audio tools including high
                      >and low pass filtering, a
                      >parametric and graphic equalizer,
                      >and, reverb and delay. With RT,
                      >waiting-for-renders is a thing
                      >of the past.

I'd love to see Canopus and Ulead
                      Systems rekindle the original
                      partnership they had before Canopus
decided to bundle the DV Raptor
with Premiere. And I'd really love
to see Canopus work with Ulead to make
the RexRT work in real time with the
                      new MediaStudio Pro version 6.

                        Yes Jerry,

But can you tell me honestly, how much you end up paying for the RT solution from Canopus vs what the RT2000 costs???

                          There's an old saying, Elie:

"You GET what you pay for."

By the way, you mentioned Avid --
which, as everybody knows, is perhaps
                            *the industry leader.*

Guess which board Avid chose for the
                            new Avid XpressDV? Hmmm?

                            a) Matrox?
                            b) Pinnacle?
                            c) Canopus?

                            THE ANSWER: CANOPUS

P.S. The Avid XpressDV software will
VERY LIKELY be available to ALL Canopus
DV Raptor owners within the next six months!

So---all Canopus DV Raptor owners will
also have the ability to become "Avid"
                              owners.
