Wow. Really? You got a scoop, for sure.
On the Canopus DV Raptor front, some
disappointing news to report regarding
the plug-in just released for MediaStudio
Pro 6.
Essentially, it works the same way as the
Canopus plug-in for MediaStudio Pro version
5.2. Capture must still be done using the
external "Raptor Video" application provided
by Canopus. While this isn't a big problem
for me... a lot of people prefer the
convenience of in-program capture.
Even so, this doesn't mean a more fully-
featured Canopus plug-in isn't forthcoming.
Ulead Systems have made it very clear on
their Web site that the new MediaStudio Pro
version 6 features "Open Capture Plug-in
Architecture."
At the bottom of the following Web site,
the text explains this feature enables
3rd party hardware manufacturers to write
their own capture engines in connection
with their unique hardware and MediaStudio Pro's Video Capture module.
I put the question to Canopus about whether
a 2nd, more fully-featured plug-in might be
in the works----and I'm awaiting a response.

Thanks, Chris. Extremely interesting.
Looks like you folks in the UK have
been honored with the official "world"
introduction of Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6.
I'm already seeing posts on the MediaStudio Pro Users Mailing List from UK residents who are installing it and using it as we speak.
The first reports are "very professional."
Verbatim. I hope so. I plan to plunk down a chunk of change, myself, very soon.
Plus, I've had a lot of high hopes for
this package for several months.

Jerry,
I spoke to BITs TS manager yesterday, and he gave me a quick rundown on the product. I didn't have time to do the job properly, you know how busy it gets at these events. He did say that the demand is so high that they don't have any copies earmarked for the press yet.
I have submitted a request of a copy for review here on the site, but as it is in such short supply I would imagine that the site will not be at the top of the priority list. We'll have to wait and see.
One really impressive fact was that they were running the software on a machine that didn't have a capture card of any description. That is, all the work was done by the software and the PC itself. It was a VERY impressive display. It's being aimed directly at offline editing, especially on laptops. It really is a very exciting product and I want to get close to it at the earliest opportunity.

Amazing. I've been so impressed by
DV, I haven't really thought about all
of the advantages of MPEG-2... such as
smaller file sizes and the ability to
use laptop computers for editing
projected video presentations to groups.
MediaStudio Pro 6 will no doubt prove
popular for that task.
Speaking of editing video
on laptops, I noticed Ulead Systems
have started bundling VideoStudio 4
with a new PC PCMCIA Firewire card:

It will probably be a few days, yet... the BIT(UK) link has nothing up about this so far, nor does the Ulead site, as far as I can see. Maybe in a few more minutes... once they can find someone to write the new web pages.
Once MPS 6.0 does get out into the mainstream, though, it could pretty much wipe out any DV advantage that Canopus had with DVRaptor all this time. However, there is that little nagging doubt I have in the back of my mind... Remember MSP 5.0? The bugs that were addressed in 5.1 and then finally in 5.2 took a while. If I concentrate hard enough, I can begin to recall all the frustration and hours of hacking I went through before the patches finally became available.
It's nice to see that this product is finally on the verge of being here. But like the Matrox RT2000, this stuff has taken WAY too long, and nobody really knows what we're in for when these long awaited products finally start getting installed on machines out here.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and although I've been getting hungrier and hungrier these past six months, I've also had a chance to let that media hyped feeding frenzy for 'great new stuff' fade away.
