  • loss from dv -> mjpeg

I'm in the middle of converting my DV format AVI's to MJPEG for editing in MSP. How much loss in quality should I expect & how can I best keep the quality of DV when editing in MSP 5.2? Of course if MSP 6.0 upgrades were available in the U.S. I would not be asking this . . alas it is not. - Kidspot

If you need to edit in MJPEG why not capture in MJPEG in first place?

To keep the best quality from a DV avi, edit the DV file directly. If it is a type 1 DV avi , convert it to type 2 before editing. You can download Adaptec Hotconnect with the DVsoft codec to do this from Adaptec' website. Installing it will overwrite any codecs which you may have installed with your DV capture card (and possibly move the inf file that tell windows where to find those codecs again). There are some workarounds and more detailed info on converting type 1 to type 2 at:

I did not capture in MJPEG because I did not believe this was possible via firewire. I assume importing footage via IEEE 1394 is a lot higher quality than the MJPEG analog capture I get with my Marvel. The software (MGI VideoWaveIII) with the IEEE 1394 card imports in DV but MSP does not handle type 1 DV files. If I'm wrong in one of my assumptions, please correct me. I will look into converting type 1 -> type 2.
