  • cropping an Mjpeg

I remember from the last production I did that you cannot crop Mjpegs when creating them. I need to cut off the outside edges of my footage (accidentally got the mike inside - oops) what is the best way to do this?

It's about 10 minutes of footage.

MSP has the Crop filter you can put on top of a clip. Set the color to black, check stationary, situate the crop, and check the last keyframe to make sure it's the same as the first. Render to a new file.

Or, better yet-- if you intend to put it in another production-- crop it then to save some generations.

Easier ways, you say? Naah, not with a Matrox card. If you wanna crop it on the way back out to tape, it'd be nice to have a vid mixer with a simple box wipe.

Hi. I have used moving path and enlarged the size at the start and end point to eliminate unwanted areas, It is a slower process though, as it takes alot longer to render.
The advantage is you can shift the image any direction ,including simulated camera zooming and panning.By using index points you can apply these to only specific times during the course of the video.
This may not be what your after for this project but it's worth keeping in mind.

Thanks for the ideas, actually going out to TV is simple because the portion I wanted to crop is in the overscan area (which is why I did not see it when filming, I was using a TV instead of the viewfinder) However when I make a copy for the web it will need cropping, so I may just use another codec for web use, and trust the overscan for VHS output. Too bad you can't just crop Mjpeg files when creating them like you can with other codecs.
