  • Capturing video to network drive

It seems to me that this was once talked about here, but it was quite a while ago, and I'm not sure how it turned out. No matter how large the potential throughput on the network connection, though, remember that it will not actually get the source data any faster than the speed it comes into the system from the RRS. Also consider that the data will get packetized before it goes over the net link, so I think that packet size will probably be the main issue.

In fact Elie has passed me a whole load of information (including diagrams) to format and publish on just this subject.

I'm not sure it's gonna be imminent tho..

I think it would be a good idea Chris, lots of people are making their own home lan, most of them with older machines, other with the father's or wife's; I have heared lately of many people doing that to use the free space of other computers, and many of them for video capturing. I do that myself and it would be nice to have some more info on that.

        He Hee,

I can picture a scene in my mind, "Darling, my computer keeps complaining about not having enough space to save the recipe I have been working with..."

          Capturing video to network drive

Hi. I have RRS on one machine at work but it's bit low on disk space. Machine is currently on 10Mbit/s HUB so no way I could capture with current setup to network, but with little extra cabling I could plug it directly to 100Mbit/s switch. Network card is already 100M model. Same switch has test machine with light load and ~150GB free on RAID 0+1 array.

So I was wondering if anyone have tried capturing to network disk thru 100Mbit/s FDX ethernet? Does PCI bus get more saturated than capturing same amount of data to HDD? How about extra CPU load? Maybe manufacturer and model of network card might matter?

Or is this crazy idea and should I save time and not bother installing new cables, but instead get few 20+GB drives to this workstation?
