  • Firewire capture format question.

I use a RRS and premiere myself. I will be doing some work on a dv camcorder. Now I've never worked with pure dv before, so when I capture it with a firewire card, what format do I save it as? Is it mpeg2 by default. Or is it another which I specify? Can I use a mpeg to avi convertor so I can bring it into premiere if that is the case? Sorry for the dumb ass questions, but hey I don't know.

DV is 720x480 (ntsc) (PAL is 720x5xx). I don't use Premiere, but the chances are pretty good that it won't import your captured DV clips. DV is its own codec format, and there are two versions for files. One is 'type 1' which is the audio and video embedded together, and the other is 'type 2' with the audio and video embedded separately. Out of the camcorder, you get 'type 1'.

What software will you use for DV capture via firewire? Your captured DV clips via firewire will be 'type 1' files. If the DV software you use can convert them to 'type 2', then you might be able to then import them to Premiere.

If you plan on doing a project that uses a mix of DV and MJPEG clips, plan on spending a lot of time rendering.
