Got that player for three months now
and I've got a lot of problems with audio.
Beside the sync problems, the video
skip. This is my second one the first one
overheated after a day of testing.

    Here is the link for more info;

Yeah, they're $179 at Circuit city -- when they have them
      in stock.
I tried a CD with MP3 files buried in subdirectories but
it didn't seem to find them, it displayed "74:30" or
something like that as if it thought it was an audio CD.
Anyway, the salesdroid didn't know how to get it to
display on their TV monitor (?) and when he said they're
      out of stock I left.
What about that Raite AV-Phile with similar features? It used
to be on egghead but has been absent lately.

It is cheap though. And I heard the audio sync is more a problem with certain DVDs than the player.

Mine works. MP3s sometimes start in the middle, and one of my Monty Python TV episode DVDs crashed the player, but other than that, I'm happy.

Friend of mine opened his up, and found that it's totally modular. It's a DVD-ROM drive with a computer of some sort. You could remove the drive unit and replace it, should it go bad.

            Just my $0.02

I work for CC. Just to let you know, all of the DVD players are modular. No manufacturer allows the boards to be repaired. The modular sections plus labor are more than the cost of the unit in almost all cases.

As of Friday I have one of these babies. So far there has been no heat problems. I have done a ton of VCD and MP3 stuff on it already. I think that it works really well in that regard. It is important that your VCD complies to VCD standards. Whitebook is very specific about the format. Anyway the machine is really great for the money. The Macrovision disable is great. The regionless loophole is great. The PAL to NTSC is going to be a great lifesaver to me! It sure beats a 700 dollar tenlab transcoder.

The actual sound DAC is the best that I have heard so far. It is really good. The video quality is good but does not seem to be quite as good as the $500 and up range DVD players. I have tested the unit with various CD-r's and CD-RWs. So far I think that this was a great expenditure. It was only 170. I like the fact that it does have Colorstream out and DTS out too.

                just my $.02

                  Hi,

I'm pretty sure this device you guys are talking about is acutally a Raite 7xx DVD. It's being sold under a different name all over the world (Raite -the manufacturer-, Tokai, Yamakawa, Kiss to name a few).

The whole point with this player is the Rom version of the machine. If it's 1.7 or previous (marked at the back of the device), it has all kinds of problems doing DVD's (The Matrix for example), MP3's .....

At a certain point, Raite changed to Rom 2.4 (or 5.34C as it's called offically) which allows Macrovision disabling/region free operation/flawless MP3 fuctionality. The only problem that still persists is the high noise volume the player develops when playing back MP3 cd's, though a fix for that is in the works.

By the way, starting at Rom2.4, the Raite allows for rom-upgrades using a standard CD that has the new code copied on it. Previous versions needed opening the machine and swapping the Rom (which is placed in an SMD socket by the way).

A great piece of hardware at a very low price. Got to love it.

                  Take Care,

                  Kris
