  • ASF encoder crashes... (and other misc. comments)

    Hi,

I would like to encode ASF files, but every time I wish to do just that whatever program I am using crashes. I have tried Stream Anywhere (trial), On Demand Producer, and Windows Media Tools. None of them work. When the time comes to enter a source file, they always crash... its a most disturbing problem. I hope it doesn't affect any other aspects of my film making process.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I'm not entirely sure this is appropriate for this forum, but has anyone noticed how well RealProducer Plus 7 Beta 2 encodes? A RM file at default settings for a target audience of 512kb Cable Modems, even at 15fps, produces a fairly high quality video with about 3-3.5mb/m! Is it just me, or has Real just never reached it's full potential on the web? I suppose it will when faster connections are availiable...

    Thanks,

    Kalor

If all three are doing you wrong, perhaps the file you're encoding from (and the codec it uses) should be taken into consideration. Try moving it to a different codec, and encode from that file. I dunno. Try things.

As far as Real, I'm annoyed by its really slow player. Yeah, you're supposed to have that Real-launch thing on the taskbar, but Windows Media doesn't need it, and it plays nicely.

More importantly, the MPEG-4 V3 codec produces some sweet, easily-tweakable results, with good-quality audio codecs, too. Windows Media Tools and SDK are also **FREE**, so you can bet you'll see more and more of it.
