  • Premiere or MSP6

I just purchased a G400/RR-G which came with Ulead MSP5.2VE. I'd like to upgrade to a more intuitive editing program. Does anyone have an opinion about which is a better program to use with the g400/RR-G; Premiere 5.1 or MSP6 (Is MSP6 actually that much better than MSP5.2 anyway)? I've done a lot of Avid Editing (Media Composer) in my business, if that means anything as far as which program would be easier to use.
Anything special I need to know?
    Thanks.

I personally prefer the layout and versatility of MSP6, but I haven't had a chance to try the full "real" version yet. I haven't seen anyone get Premiere to work very well with the G400. The advantage of MSP 6 is that it will edit MPEG or DV and just about anything you throw in the timeline. What appears to be the best combination of power and usability with the Matrox products would be the full version of MSP5.2. There isn't a whole lot of difference in MSP6 and 5.2, besides the use of a source window and the scrub window. They are actually the same. There are very few extra filters and transitions (most people would never use them) and the way MSP5.2 uses the video overlay to output video to your TV is extremely smooth. No delays, MSP6 seems to have probelms with frame by frame advances going black with MJPEG. It works pretty well with MPEG4, though there are small delays in scrubbing, due to the most keyframes you can use when capturing to MPEG4 are 1 per second and the inherent nature of MPEG (needing the info from previous frames to create the next). It really depends on what format you plan on capturing and editing with. hopefully someone with the "real" MSP6 can shed some more light on the subject for you. I am holding off on buying the upgarde until I hear that it really is as smooth as MSP5.2 with the G400. I clung to Premiere for the longest time, trying to get it to work, but after using MSP, I can't go back. Adobe even says on there website that it doesn't support Matrox video cards (except for maybe the new Oh my God one) and I'm not to sure to what extent.

I've also noticed in the MSP6 "New Features"
article that Ripple Editing has been improved. It seems a little weak in 5.2, so I wonder how much of an improvement there really is.
Also, I have a Pentium III, which Ulead says MSP6 is optimized for. Is this just hype?

        Yippee

Not hype: there are more multimedia commands in PIII: not essential but extra performance as it short-circuits work-arounds which require an extra processor cycle for each.
