  • mixing analogue and dv in same timeline

Seems like many of you are combining the G400/RR2 with a DV card like the Pyro or Raptor.
My question is, can you capture both analogue and digital and use in the same timeline/project?

The short answer is yes, you can put any format clip into the timeline you want. Rendering a preview or a finished project will certainly take a lot longer, though.

Okay, maybe the RT2000 is the best way to go to mix analogue and digital. Anyone know where to get an RT2000 for a great price?

Just because you can mix analogue and DV in the same timeline isn't a reason to jump to an RT2000!

As Jeff says - yes it can be done - what he didn't say is that the two sources will look different and be obvious to the viewer.

The first, main difference is the size / format of the clips. Analogue captures will generally be 704 * 576 (in my PAL corner of the world) DV will be 720 * 576. So something has to go when you render the final project. You either crop your DV or stretch your analogue. Also you will get the usual differences between source cameras - colour balance, sharpness of focus, exposure etc - some of these can be worked around others can't. If it's for home / hobby use - no problems - if it's for others to view, then I would think twice about mixing from different formats.

I understand the quality will be inconsistant between DV and analogue sources. That's fine with me since this is pretty much for "home-movie" and archive stuff. That said, what do you recommend?
