Doc,

I just executed my Canopus Analog Capture Kit software, which enables the analog inputs on the DV Raptor board to function as capture ports... and not just overlay conduits.

This software basically installs a Video for Windows analog capture driver.

In the analog capture options, I see four choices:

1. RGB 5:5:5
2. Full Color
3. Pallettized
4. UYVY

I've focused so much on DV format video, I haven't really studied the various analog options.

Would you kindly explain the advantages of each of the above choices?

I can try:

YUYV is also called 4:2:2 and is use for professional Broacasting so I'd recommed to use it.

RGB5:5:5 is RGB16 which sound not great quality (4:2:2 preferred)

Full could br RGB24 or RGB32, the best but large file, more memory and CPU and will probably be converted to 4:2:2 further.

Palettized: depends size of the indexed color, forget about it

Note: DVD is 4:2:0 and is very good, 4:2:2 is better

UYVY is the preferred option. This is a YUV flavor which is the same as YUY2 but with the chroma red and chroma blue component order transposed. It has a 4:2:2 colorspace.

RGB usually loses something in the translation from YUV, which is how captures are done: YUV=>capture format.

Palletized would be OK for flat animations, but not very good for 3D or video.
