  • QuickTime trouble... of all things...

Recently, MediaStudio Pro 6 refused to start on my system, ending with a fatal crash in... of all things... SYSTEM\QUICKTIME.QTS. (Sheesh!)

Of course, the logical first step is to re-install QuickTime 4.1. This unfortunately assumes that it can be uninstalled, and good ol' QT refuses to do so, on the grounds that something is using QT. Even if I start up my system and go straight to the uninstall program without touching anything, QT refuses to go away.

The weirdest part is, reading through the list of files the uninstall program intends to remove, QUICKTIME.QTS isn't one of them.

I've circumvented the problem for now by renaming QUICKTIME.QTS, but that impairs surfin' the net. Whatcha think I should do? And who do you think is to blame, QT 4.1 or MSP 6.0? Nothing happened recently that might have caused this... literally, in two successive runs of MSP, one loaded and the other failed and has failed since.

(scratch head) The best I can guess is that it's caused by Murphy's Law; I've got a big video project due tomorrow...

One thing that I've found with MSP6 is that when you start VEditor, it gives up control to some of the drivers it loads at startup. For instance, I had a vestige of the RR-S driver in my system, and the first time I started VEditor without my camcorder alive on the 1394 line, it tried to load the RR-S driver. Since the RR-S was no longer in the system, this part of the RR-S driver hung the system. MSP couldn't 'let go' or bypass it at that point.

Most likely, some component of QT has either gone corrupt or is now missing, and prevents it from loading right. This could easily prevent it from uninstalling, too. Ain't that a kick in the head? I'd give it a fifty-fifty chance that if you re-installed it, that you could then easily uninstall it... But, of course, then you wouldn't have to.

Yes, Murphy has you by the cajones on this one, fluggo!

      It's not Murphy its MicroSoft.

I claim anything that requires more than a copy *.* and perhaps a simple human readable line in a config file to "install" is broken by design.

How we ever let ourselves get into this damn registry mess I'll never know!

Yeah... it's William H. Gates III and his newest OS: "World Domination 2000".

          ha ha ha... how confusing

Note that there are more than likely two QuickTimes listed in your Add/Remove Programs panel... "QuickTime for Windows (32-bit)" and just plain ol' "QuickTime."

Note also that you probably have two control panel icons for QuickTime... a cool blue icon labeled "QuickTime," and a prehistoric icon labeled "QuickTime 32."

So, if you're uninstalling QT 4.1, you want to pick the one labeled "QuickTime." The other is that antique 32-bit version 2.1.2.59. Apple could help by labeling things better!

I need to get more sleep...

Reports will continue as Fluggo re-installs QT 4...
