  • Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0

    Hi everybody,

I used to search option to find out whether it was posted before, but didn't get any results, so please forgive me if it's an old hat for you ...

Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0

Users of video capture devices should install this update after installing the DirectX 8.0 or 8.0a runtime. Video capture devices include:

    • TV tuner and video capture cards/peripherals (AGP, PCI, USB, or IEEE 1394).
    • Digital Video (DV) devices connected to OHCI-compliant IEEE 1394 ports.

The update installs files from the DirectX 8.0a redistribution runtime (bundled with applications) that are not installed by the runtimes available from the home user download site.

Based on the file name and size this appears to be the same thing I download as "DirectX 8.0a DV update".

I guess things aren't confusing enough so some new webpage names are in order.

      wkulecz, from the FAQ:

      Q. What is the Video Capture Update? Why was it originally called the DV Updater? Why was the name changed?

      A. This is a complex but important topic. The end-user runtimes do not install updated files for TV tuners, video capture, or the DV driver. Hardware or applications needing this functionality were expected to ship the full redistribution runtime with their product. Two cases drove the addition of the DV Updater:

      * PAL support and improved compatibility with Sharp, Canon, and JVC camcorders. Customers already owning these products and related applications get immediate benefits from installing DirectX 8 and the DV Updater.
      * Web releases for applications depending on DirectX 8. Download bandwidth is still an issue for many customers, and many already have the end-user runtime installed. Requiring a vendor to bundle the relatively large redistribution runtime with a small application increases the burden on the vendor and the user.

In simplest terms, end-user runtime + DV Updater = full redistribution runtime. All files are exactly the same for both DirectX 8.0 and 8.0a, and the Updater will install over either one. There are no file changes in the DV Updater newer than the DX 8.0a release.

Unfortunately, a fairly recent issue with the DirectX 8 setup program was found. Installation of an older revision of the full redistribution by an application on top of a newer end-user runtime will not update the key "BDA" files needed for video capture. The results may be different depending on order of installation:

      * If DirectX 8 is not installed or if the DirectX 8.0 end-user runtime is already installed, installation of the full DirectX 8.0 or 8.0a redistribution by an application will work correctly. The DV Updater is not needed.
      * If the DirectX 8.0a end-user runtime is already installed, installation of the DirectX 8.0a redistribution will be correct but installation of the DirectX 8.0 redistribution will not operate properly. Users of Adobe Premiere 6.0, which distributes 8.0, may experience too-fast audio playback or other issues and should install the DV Updater.

It is recommended to install the update in any case, as it will help to ensure the proper configuration. Due to this setup issue, the package was renamed from DV Updater to Video Capture Update. Users of ATI All-In-Wonder, VIVO, or TV Tuner cards and ATI's Multimedia Center (MMC) 7.1 or higher should install the update, as MMC depends on DirectX 8 functionality. All IEEE 1394 users should install the update to ensure that the DirectX 8 version of the DV driver is installed.

It is expected that the setup issue will be resolved in a future release.
Thanks for the news Maggi, but I'm confused at what the updated files actually do. I know that it updates DirectX files that don't get updated with the regular user install, but why do these files need updating when things look like they work?

Hmmm, is it just my server, or is it usual to have so much trouble downloading anything from the Microsoft site? I've been trying to download DirectX 8.0a using my ADSL connection, but the most I can get is 50% of the (11 MB) file before the download just hangs.

I've been trying for three hours. I'm giving up for now...

Try Godzilla http://www.gozilla.com/info.html so that the download can be resumed.

Thanks again, John. You've been most helpful the last couple of days!

That Gozilla program is kinda interesting the way it downloads bits and pieces of large files from a variety of sites. Even with Gozilla's help, it still took 11 minutes to download DirectX 8.0 using ADSL. So much for having a "fast" internet connection, eh?
