For those who are interested in the quality that can be achieved with this even with low-bitrates (1000KBps) at full-res I've upped a short 53sec example clip (DVD flasked to DivX4):

Warning: 7.5MB, you need the DivX 4 codec to play back, of course.

I like having my movies on my HD so that I can simply take my computer with me and not have to carry those DVDs with me (and probably scratch them). DivX4/MP3 seems to be the way to go...

ugh, now I'm having compression problems. Everytime I try to compress a Huffyuv video with DivX Beta 2, VDub/Premiere crashes. I've used the 4 different types with/without avi/mp3 audio and it crashes. So I could encode with Beta 1, but couldn't play. Now I can play, but can't encode. Odd...

        Good news bad news...
I have enjoyed some half decent results in working on Divx compression from AVI and MPEG files. Not as good as the movies from SG1 with 43 minutes compressed into 20 MB, but I can acheive the 43 minutes into about 60 MB. only problem so far is that while they seem to work farily good on my Marvel G400, I tried one that I made on my G400, I then copied it over and played it on another computer with a Matrox Mystique G200, and it was all messed up badly. (I can play regular DVD's on the G200 on that computer, it has Win98, the G200 and a real nice DVD player. it appears that these Divx movies that I can make on my Marvel G400 will not play back in any form that is watchable on the G200. It is really messed up playing it back on the Windows Media Player, I installed extra Codecs on the G200, but I guess it needs another G400 and that codec to get those results. of course I am not going to install a G400 codec Divxs codec on a G200. I am worried if I experiment I might screw up that computer. Oh well, more work, more experimenting with various codecs and programs.

That's odd, cause I have a Marvel G200 and the videos play back perfectly fine. Which DivX codec are you using? I don't know if you really want to compress SG1 episodes down to 20 like they did. Personally I feel that it is too low of a quality. I like to compress my Simpson and Futurama episodes to around 60 or 70. Although the one DivX 4 two-pass VBR I was able to do was around 45MB and it looked like the same quality as the CBR 70 videos.

Oh and BTW what audio settings are you using?

DivX Beta 3 has been released. Aparently they left some stuff in that causes the encoder to crash on Celeron/PII. Hopefully they didn't put stuff back into the decoder that crashes on a Celeron. :P
