      You mean, splitting an AVI into its separate streams?

      You could download the DirectShow SDK from Microsoft and construct a filter graph to do it (most universal/most tricky). Demuxes are standard filters, and you'll be guaranteed to get every stream in the file.

      If you're just looking to split the audio and video, some sound editors, like GoldWave, will allow you to open only the sound part of an AVI or MPG. Also, all the major editors will allow you to split up the video and audio.
