From the Readme/Profeatures, it looks like the "video recorder" app is missing which is the only thing that would make Free BEOS 5 on-topic for this board.

yeah.. i'm kinda disapointed too with all the stuff they cut out. the way they were making it sound out to be, we'd be getting quite a bit more than... well, what they gave. Still, it gives you a chance to check out SOME of it.. although not enough for me to slap down any money on the "pro" version, unfortunatly.

          I know the feeling,
What is this... a shell that runs under Windows???
So basically it's performance it hindered because of Windows.
Oh well, I'm gonna install it, just to see what it's like.

          Regards,

            Elie,
It doesn't run under Windows. When it's started from Windows, it restarts you computer to reboot into BeOS. Instead of a partion, Be is located in an image file on your hard disk. This is similar to how certian Linux version and some other small OS run. When you then restart BeOS, you computer will revert to Windows again.

              In response to Wally:

"From the Readme/Profeatures, it looks like the "video recorder" app is missing which is the only thing that would make Free BEOS 5 on-topic for this board."

Actually, I believe BeOS will become a great video editing app for DV, since it supports the G400 and most DV cards, and will soon have available for a new version of the video editing "personalStudio" program.

BeOS is important for any media type, since it plays them all back so well. I saw a screenshot of someone who had 50 instances of the Star Wars trailer playing on his BeOS machine at the same time! NOw, Im not about to claim that they were all playing back real time, but I think sparks would start flying from my harddrive if I tried that in Windows.

Another thing thats cool about BeOS is that multi processor machines take FULL advantage of ALL processors (up to 8).

As for processing power and speed, BeOS doesn't use the G400s hardware, yet, but my machine (PII-300, 128Mb RAM) can play back 320x240 video sources full screen (stretched using software) without noticable stuttering.

Since most machines are now more powerfull than mine, I'd say playing back video should be no problem whatsoever in BeOS, and once it uses some of the hardware features of video cards, watch out!!

What BeOS needs right now is a good, loyal user base to prove to the corporations that BeOS *IS* a VERY strong media system, which people are interested in seeing become a media creation standard in platforms. I know Im damn interested, I hope some of you are, too.

Its putup or shutup time for BeOS. I've heard all these claims of how great it was and free BeOS 5 was gonna show everybody.

I was ready to give it a trial, but the only thing for me that could possibly make it worthwhile right now is missing. From the review at the byte website, the video editing package is not gonna make Adobe or Ulead quake in their boots anytime soon, but it was supposedly useful functionality. If they offered a 100% money back gaurentee, I might try it, otherwise I'll believe it when I see it and am not willing to pay anything right now to find out.

OTOH, it wouldn't be hard to be "better" than win9x. Win2000 is for me right now and I don't have to junk every other piece of software I'm using right now. Still some irratating problems with CD burning and directCD, but DV editing with MSPro6.0 will be a joy once they resolve the issue of audio sync on captures greater than ~18min and get the bugs out of openDML video capture files greater than 4GB on NTFS.

I did download the free BeOs5 but without the video editing app it's a very low priority for me to play with right now. Well below testing SUSE 6.2 Linux to see how well Star Office might be as a general windows replacement desktop for a naive user who wants bacic Internet and word processing. Of course any useful video editing for Linux is missing and although people are working on it, its got a long way to go. I do use Linux heavily as a file server and firewall, right tool for the job.

Well, how about a BeOS computer that runs at 1200Mhz? Heres the system:
                  http://www.bemachines.com/dpw/dpw.html

BeOS takes almost full advantage of each additional processor you have in your computer without reconfiguration, like the above dual Xeon system. After you check THAT out, check out the QP series (1800Mhz!)!! This kind of power is ESSENTIAL for video editing.

Want to edit DV? UltraDV will be out this summer (sorry, the time isn't here yet), and this following article suggests that standard 5200RPM hard drives are perfectly capable of editing DV full res at full frame rate.
                  http://www.byte.com/column/Be_View/BYT20000307S0004

UltraDV is going to be around $200. Heres more information about it, and a screen of a working version (now showing some age, which implies to me that the new version is going to be pretty sweet):
                  http://www.mediapede.com

Many programs were removed from FreeBe for size purposes, experimental and programs that were larger, and not necessary, mostly. Thats the only reason video recorder was not packaged with BeOS5.

I'll shut up, now, but as a personal OS: BeOS is pretty damn nice, and as a video editing OS, BeOS is making speedy progress - Don't shut it out so quickly.

Any news of a port of Premiere or MS to over to BeOS? Can BeOS run Windoze stuff?

As all OS's, programs need to be written specifically for BeOS. However, porting Linux programs is apparently not terribly dificult, for various reasons.

Coding for BeOS is apparently much easier than for other OS's (and some say more fun, too).

Adobe are just STARTING to port some of their programs over to other operating systems, and were pretty adament about not porting Photoshop, for whatever reason. However, if Premiere WAS ported to BeOS, it probably wouldn't take advantage of BeOS to it's full possibility. Thats why it will be better to look into UltraDV, the soon-to-be-released DV editor for BeOS.
