VCD and XVCD use 352x240 NTSC or 352/288 PAL Mpeg-1 video files with one stereo audio audio channel. VCD 3.0 Interactive added some interactive features, but the A/V quality is the same.
SVCD uses 480x480 NTSC or 480x576 PAL MPEG-2 video files with up to two MPEG2 Layer II stereo audio channels. MPEG2 Multi-Channel 5.1 surround audio is also possible.
SVCD can also handle 16:9 anamorphic wide screen and its also backward compatable with VCD 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 Interactive VCD.
Many of the new DVD players coming out of China support SVCD, although often this support is not overtly stated. SVCD was actually created by the Chinese as an alternative to DVD because of DVD's high (for the Chinese) licensing fees. Since SVCD's have a running time of <45 min this means they release a movie on 2-4 SVCD disks.
One problem for videographers is that precious little in the way of affordable software is available for burning SVCD's, although this will change given its rapid acceptance and the clamor for same ;-)
