  • Droped frames with my brand new audio card. Help, please.

Today I received my brand new Sonic Fury (Santa Cruz) retail card and tested it directly to capture some short videos from a TV channel and VHS.
Capturing with PD 5.55 VT 1.52 combination and with my brand new Sonic Fury (=Santa Cruz) drops 1 frame/ 150 captured frames.
    The # increses proportionally.
    Captured with PC VCR
Capturing wit AVI_IO: the same drops.

Tested with HW MJPEG, full size PAL and half size PAL with the same results.

Capturing only video, no drops at all.

    OS: Win98 SE.
    DirectX 7.0 SW

    IRQ 9: SonicFuryGameDevice
IRQ10: SonicFury PCI Audio Accelerator + IRQ holder
    IRQ 11: Matrox Marvel G400 AGP-English + IRQ holder

The audio card is in the PCI slot 3.

When first installed it, in PCI slot 2 the audio AND video shared the IRQ 11, so I moved it to slot 3.

The AGP driver is for AMD 761 ver. 4.80

I am dissappointed Did I buy a wrong type of audio card?

My earlier computer, an AMD K6/2-400 and a SB ISA card worked better.
Mayby the settings are wrong, in SonicFury (SantaCruz)?

    Please, help.

    Doc, could you help

What drivers are you using for the Santa Cruz?

I bought a Sonic Fury (I'm in the UK), but the drivers supplied were crap (these were "branded" Video Logic). I had all sorts of problems whith delayed sound in games, crashing MP3's, etc, etc

Get the latest drivers (for Santa Cruz) from Turtle Beach's web site and try again.

      Thanks Rob100.
Installed the VideoLogic 2.80 driver attached to the SF-box.
I'll try to download the SC drivers.
Huhhh, 23 MB with my 56 modem ? (Soon I'l get a 2 Mb duplex radiolink broadband, but until that.....)

In the same boat here with crappy 56k (more like 40k) dial up :-( Where I live DSL and other broad band technologies will be a long time coming... Oh well, let me know how you get on.

Funny, we are both online just now, Rob 100

...and I'm just downloading the S481ME9X.ZIP file which is a bit shorter, "only" 20 MB

As I said, I'm a little dissappointed because I've got so many good advices, here at this Forum, about the SC vs. SB so my decision was 100 % for SF/SC.

Hope that the new drivers will help.
Yes it seems to be some audio delay issue.

I am also disappointed, because just built a new computer fast enough, even without RAID, for not too advanced short video, and just that audio card causes trouble which wouldn't.

            Some thoughts;

            1. Install VIA's 4-in-1 4.32 drivers, if you haven't done it already.

This incorporates the 686b fix and has a new AGP GART driver.

            2. Install DirectX8a + the Video Capture Update for DirectX8

All of the systems I'm running the TBSC on are running Dx8a, the Video Capture Update, the latest TB drivers and the scruz405 mixer patch.

              Thanks Doc,
4In1 4.32 installed allready except the AGP driver.
The AMD 761 AGP driver 4.80 installed.
              and:

              Nothing helps, yet:

              1.
              -downloaded Turtle Beach drivers s481me9x.zip
              -uninstalled Video Logic drivers
-installed Turtle Beach Santa Cruz drivers ver. 4.12.01.4081-2927
              -captured with AVI_IO:
              352x576 PAL with 22050, 16 b stereo: 0.80% drops
704x576 PAL same audio 1.20% drops
704x576 PAL NO audio 0.00% drops!
(my older system with SB ISA audio 0.00% drops )
              2.
-moved the card to slot 4:
              -no changes in IRQ
              -no changes in drops
              3.
              -installed DirectX 8.0 SW
-checked the Matrox Marvel G400 Information:
              -shows M$ DirectX 4.07.00.0700 (?) not DirectX 8.0
              4.
              -Santa Cruz Control Panel->Other
              -Disabled Legacy DOS Game...
              -NO changes in drops

              5.
              -ACPI disabled all the time.

              6.
Should I change the Sonic Fury card (printed: "Santa Cruz" on the backside of the card) to a SoundBlaster?

              7.
Should I uninstall and test the onboard audio? (never installed this) The crasyest thing I should do.

              8.
Now I am back here, disappointed, and asking for help, please.

              9.
One more thing: AVI_IO Devices shows 2 rows with Matrox VidCap Driver, why?

Are the drops falling into anything resembling a pattern? Every 20, 30 seconds etc.?

Have you turned off auto-insert notification on your CD drives (in Device Manager)?

                Are you running Cacheman's optimizations?

                Have you gone through Matrox's list of Win9x/ME optimizations? ;

Make sure you select "show all topics" or it might look like an empty thread.

                  Fred H,

Sorry to hear you are still having problems.

Santa Craz is a great card, so don't change it for SB.

When capturing with AVI_IO what do the buffer "peak" at?

What else do you have in your PC? Network card, SCSI card, etc, etc? Does you manual tell you what slot shares with what slot?

Have you considered the move to Win2k rather than 98?

                  Rob.

Have you tried both 44.1 KHz and 48 KHz sampling rates for capturing?
Resistance is futile - Microborg will assimilate you.

                      EUREKA!
I found it, thanks to your advices Doc and Rob I revised all the settings.
Are the drops falling into anything resembling a pattern? Every 20, 30 seconds etc.?
Every 4-10 seconds, variing during the capture.

What else do you have in your PC? Network card, SCSI card, etc, etc?
Nothing, yet, but a radio lan card for broadband will be installed soon

Have you considered the move to Win2k rather than 98?
Yes. Maybe dual boot. Definitly not XP.

                      Now the solution: Msconfig.exe
showed in Autostart several things double setup, like Systray.exe (probably English + Swedish) disabled one
                      LoadPowerProfile, double. Disabled both.
                      SchedulingAgent: disabled

I don't know which one made the videocapture crazy, but it works now. No drops at all.
I AM tired, after only 2 hour in the bed this night. but I AM happy now.

Thank you very much for helping

Flying dutchman, I tried 44.1 and 22 KHz but not 48.

Now, it looks like a triumph for the Sanat Cruz.

Good to hear you got things sorted Fred H.

I have my DTV system set-up as dual boot 98SE/Win2k, but haven't booted into 98 for ages. It (Win98) drives me mad having used Win2k for so long now. Go on (install Win2k), you know you want to ;-) I'm that fixed on using Win2k now I re-formatted my 90gb RAID array (3 x IBM 30gig GXP's on FT100) to NTFS the other day.

                          Rob.

Yup, disabling the power management and scheduling agent in MSCONFIG is one of those things that should be done in editing systems.

I must have at least 20 things unchecked in there ranging from RealTray to those you mentioned. Each of them polls the system looking for something to do. Same goes for the CD's autoinsert "feature".
