Hello' Dr. Mordrid...

I'm a first time poster on the MURC forums and I'm trying to make my Marvel G200 work in W2K wth soft codecs...

On the Morgan's website I've found a reference to one external link which is, I suspect, an article you wrote on some early incarnation of the MURC site...

Needless to say, the link is broken now, but I nevertheless would like to know what you suggested to potential users of the codec...

Given your vast knowledge of practically anything related to computing, I'm sure I'm going to learn something new!

Also, do you have any suggestion on what VT/Drivers combo would be better to set up?

And, last question, I see in your specs that you have both Premiere and MediaStudio... can they be installed on the same system without any interference? Is there anything I should take care about?

The final Marvel G200-TV drivers support YUY2 capture in Win2K. Using alternative capture software like AVI_IO or VirtualDUB and with a decent speed system you can capture to MJPeg by;

1. install a soft MJPeg codec (Morgan or PICVideo MJPeg work great)

2. run the capture proggie (AVI_IO is my favorite for lots of reasons)

3. set the destination drive

4. select YUY2 as the format and set the frame size you need

5. select either Morgan or PICVideo MJPeg in the Compression settings

6. start capturing.

The YUY2 capture capability also allows you to capture MPEG's from VideoStudio and MSPro as well. Having the Ulead DVD Plugin installed with both of its patches will give better results.

The HUFFYUV codec can be used to capture very high quality uncompressed video at about 11 mb/s. HuffYUV files are great for making high quality MPEG's or doing short special effect sequences, but unless you have a very large drive or RAID array you will only be able to fit a few minutes on the video drive.

As far as the article about Morgan goes, I don't remember writing one and I don't see the link with my handle on Morgans site. However, a quite smart fellow, Uwe Roeder, wrote one that discribed how to get Morgans output to play to a Rainbow Runners vidout.

Uwe's technique was also used with earlier Marvel G200 drivers, but I don't know if it'll work with the final drivers as I no longer have a marvel G200 installed. Perhaps others can advise on this.

This hack became moot with the advent of the Marvel G400 & G450 cards and their DVDMax feature, which can play about any codec to the vidout as long as DirectShow can play it.

A small detail, but I believe Matrox' official dirvers support YUY2 capture only on G400s and up. Unfortunately for G200 owners the only recommended format is RGB under W2k.
There's a way to enable YUY2 at your own risk, which was given to me by Haig over at the Matrox forum:

the Marvel G200 under 2k only has RGB enabled. You can try at your own risk copying all vin*.* files from the previous drivers into this final driver and see if it will work. Just back up any important files before doing this.

I stand corrected. The G200 only has RGB capture under Win2K (don't have a G200 installed any more plus I misread the page :-\ ).

Still, it should be able do pull off these captures but it will require somewhat more CPU horsepower to do it. Just sub. RGB for YUY2 in my original reply.

I'd probably just update to an eTV just for the DVDMAX and YUY2.

Er, Doc, the max resolution for RGB is 640x480 which is absolutely unsatisfactory for us PAL users.... We need 576 pixels vertical resolution. The G200 is unusable in RGB mode (at least to me) ...

I think I'll try the "Unofficial" way for YUY2 activation... RGB is not an option due to frame size limitation, nor it is buying a new card right now! eTV is just too expensive right now here in Italy!

By the way, Dr. Mordrid, this is the statement I refer to in my original post, and it is taken from Uwe's page:

Ahhhh....that was my trick for getting 4 mb/s out of Matrox's MJPeg codec. That worked with earlier versions of the G200's Video Tools, but changes made in later builds made it unworkable. That trick was first used on the old Rainbow Runner Studio, so it had a pretty good run.

IF you can get YUY2 to work then PICVideo MJPeg with a quality of 20 captures at about 5 mb/s @704x480/576, given that your CPU and drive can handle it.

I've just put up another question on the forum to Andy W... he seems to have the only W2K/Marvel G200 working setup with YUY2... hope to get some clues: I'm experimenting but I'm afraid I'll crash my system beyond the imagination...

Sometimes I'm tempted to go the ATI A.I.W's way but, then, do they have a forum with so many helpful and knowledgeable people ;-)????
