I was able to get the G200 Video Tools to work on XP RC1/RC2.

    1) Install Windows 2000 Professional (server)
    2) Log in using the primary user account that you will be using
    3) Install the proper Matrox Video Drivers / Video Tools / Patches
    4) Verify that the video tools work.
    5) Upgrade the current installation of Windows 2000 to Windows XP using winnt32 /unattend
    6) Control Panel -> System -> Remote Control (disable)
    7) Disable Terminal Services (services)
    8) Re-RUN the matrox display driver setup using application compatibility set to Windows 2000
    9) Reboot
    10) Test video tools and recording

Note - You will lost the new UI interface and be replaced by the Windows 2000 Start-Up and Fast Task Switching, etc.

I was unsucessfull installing the Video Tools on top of XP. I had to downgrade to Windows 2000, install the tools and then perform an upgrade.

If anybody else has an additional comments and/or experience please post in this thread. Windows XP is soon schedule to RTM.

    Thanks,
    Laz.

Can't comment on the G200, but managed to get the G400 somewhat functional/stable using the 5.39 vid driver with the 2.02 vid tools. Very kludge I relize, but didn't have to do any fresh installs. This system has seen an upgrade path from 2k to RC1 to RC2 and the above combo has worked for both XP rounds. I have gotten the same "unable to finish...try later" message that everyone else has mentioned with the 2.04 finals and leaked tools. Any other feedback is appreciated.

      Thanks,

        Older Drivers

Did you have to remove terminal servicers? and the XP GUI?

        Thanks,
        Laz.

          Laz,

I never installed terminal services and XP gui is in place. It captures in RGB only and the TV tuner looks great which is about all the functionality left by the final factory drivers. This setup is on my wifes machine and has been BSOD free since this driver combo was installed (over 7 wks)......luckily!!! I moved that card over to her machine after about month 13 of the driver delay and jumped on the Radeon wagon.

          Her machine:

          P3 850
          256 M 100mhz sdram
Supermicro P6SBA with 3.1 bios rev
          Hollywood dvd decoder
          Pioneer 8X SCSI DVD drive
          Plextor 12x10x32 ide burner
          SB Live econo
Matrox G400 Marvel with latest bios
          Adapter 2930 (?) SCSI Card

Hope that helps everyone in XP land,

          gt2000

I was able to get this working in this manner as well.

            1) Install Win2k
            2) Install PD 5.39.019
            3) Install VT 2.04.015
            4) Install PD 5.71.014 beta
            5) Upgrade to WinXP
            6) Reinstall PD 5.71.014 beta

So far I have only tried watching TV, not capturing, and it works fine, even with the new beta drivers. Plus the beta drivers work well with XP and let you use custom resolutions and monitor profiles again as well as DualHead.

I did a regular upgrade to XP (not unattended) and I didn't have to disable any services or fast user switching or visual styles once XP was installed. Of course, the Matrox VidCap driver doesn't work inside Windows Movie Maker.

Since the VTs seem to work fine under XP, perhaps Matrox will at least repair the installation program to save us the Win2k install. They have already said publicly they plan no new VTs for XP, so this is all we can hope for.

              Mark,

Did you lose the Windows XP Start Menu with the new beta video drivers?

              Thanks,
              Laz.

                Hi Laz,

Nope, the Windows XP Start Menu is still intact. None of the new Windows XP features seem to have been disabled by the video tools or the beta drivers.

I've managed to find a way to install the Video Tools under XP (non-W2000 upgrade), although it does require W2K at some point.

                  1. Install W2K
                  2. Install Video Drivers
                  3. Install WinstallLE found on your Win2K CD in the support directory
                  4. Start WinstallLE Discover Process
                  5. Install Matrox Video Tools
                  6. Reboot
                  7. Run WinstallLe again to complete the process. This new package should install on XP.

I did have some issues on this, and didn't do the clean install as outlined above. MJPEG wouldn't work, and I had to re-register a file, but this should start as a good starting off point for others while I try to RMA my G400.

                    DrBoB,

Did you have to install the Beta Video Drivers, or did the video tools work without the Matrox video drivers (using the standard windows XP Matrox drivers) ?

                    Thanks,
                    Laz.

To tell you the truth, I installed the 5.71 beta drivers. My main test was being able to install the VT's at all since the Matrox supplied ones don't work at all. Rebundling them with the WinstallLe looks like a good solution once the steps have been worked out properly.

I probably won't be able to completely work things out as my G400 is starting to die, and I'm hoping to get an RMA for it soon. Thought this might be a good starting off point for people to try creating their own install package including the latest Macrovision/YUY2 patches.

Thanks DrBob! WinstallLE was exactly what I was looking for to handle this problem but I had no idea it existed!

I will give this a try when I do my next clean install of XP.

DrBoB, is the Win2k CD that you used by any chance a beta version? I cannot find WinstallLE anywhere on my Win2k release CD. After doing some reading on the web, it seems a beta of WinstallLE was included on beta Win2k CDs (such as beta 3).

In any case, I have downloaded a trial version of Winstall from VERITAS. Hopefully this will work when I do my next XP install.

Nope... it's a full retail (NFR) copy of Win2K Pro. It's no on the server edition to my recollection... and I'd have to reach down to check Got it when the last beta finished. Looking forward to receiving my XP Professional box now!

Strange. I have an OEM Win2k "For distribution with a new PC only" and it doesn't have WinstallLE on it. I'll be doing another reinstall tomorrow so we'll see if the trial version can accomplish the same thing.
