Hi all,
I've been bugged for about 6 months by a fault in the G-200 Marvel. On booting up the computer, perhaps 1 in 5 times on an average, starting to do anything connected with the G-200 video, the whole damn issue would freeze solid and nothing short of a hard reboot would get it going again but still without any video functions. Rerunning the PD and VT installation made no difference, even after uninstalling 'em. I did find that re-installing W98SE always got it working again (I got into the habit of switching it on 30 minutes before I needed it, in case it was necessary to reinstall the O/S. Last week, it failed as usual, but the Win re-install did not do the trick. I swore an almighty swear word so loudly that the might of the Middle East trembled, especially as I did not have time to mess around with a complete Win re-install from scratch. I tried one last thing and it worked. Since then the system has (touch wood) been stable.
I uninstalled VT 1.52. I then used RegCleaner (freeware obtainable from http://www.jv16.org/), which is not to be confused with the MS RegClean. This found and eliminated automatically 38 references to VT 1.52 in the Registry. I rebooted and re-installed VT 1.52. Et voila!, it worked. (The same thing with RegClean does not work, because it eliminated only one reference to VT).
Moral of the story: uninstalling VT leaves just one helluva lot of crap in the registry which can interfere with subsequent re-installations. This is sheer bad programming by the Matrox guys (they are not the only guilty ones, though, by a long chalk!). If you have problems with VT, this is one easy way to try sorting it out before doing anything too drastic. I strongly recommend RegCleaner for general registry maintenance (it even eliminates time bombs on some uninstalled proggies, but not all!).
FWIW
