  • Divx probs on a K6-2 500 + Marvel G400

Sorry mate this is a bit irrelevant but are you happy with the K6-2 500's?

I currently have a K6-2 300 and was seriously considering upgrading to 500 especially now their so cheap. Of course I would really like a Athlon or even a K6-3 but I would have to get a new MB and my budget don't quite streach.

Yeah so I was just wondering how you found them in terms of games and DVD play back.

    Any info would we nice

    Divx probs on a K6-2 500 + Marvel G400

    Hi,

    I recently installed 3 pcs with 3 K6-2 500, 1 Fic PA2013, 2 AOPEN SK7 MB's.
The 3 Pc's received a Fresh Install of WIN98,Wind. media player 6..., DivX alpha ....
    The first: Marvel G400
    Second: Riva TNT2
    Third : S3 Trio 8Mb

    used resolution: 800 * 600 24 /16 bit
1st one: When playing a Divx sample full screen: CPU goes 100 % (windows\tools\...) and Windows Media player can't handle it ;(
    2) Same problem ;(
    3) It works with a simple S8 ! Even at 1024*768 without a problem!
Why do the other 2 not work ?
    any idea?

Tinnes: I have 2 systems one K6-2/450 @506 (112*4.5) and a K6-3/450. The K6-2 isn't that much slower than the K6-3 when on a 112 bus. It is faster than 100*5. Both CPU's have similar DVD playback. The 2.2volt K6-2's overclock well. I would go for the K6-2/500, try clocking it to 550.

ccc: From what I understand the G400 accelerates 16 bit and 32 bit color not 24 bit. Try changing it's color depth to 16. If you did this already, sorry, I wasn't sure what 800 * 600 24 /16 bit means.

Hmmm. There was ONE difference: 2 PC's (1,2) with SB live Value 1024
        nr. 3 (working) AWE64.

I installed Win98 without audio and IT WORKS! No lost frames!
So the prob seems to be the audio codec, or too high CPU of SB Live 1024 ;(
        Anyone any idea?

As long as you don't increase the voltage the temperature won't increase that much. My 450 is overclocked but still at the 2.2v setting. The memory will be a hit or miss. My PC100 memory would lockup within a half hour, but that doesn't mean others won't work. It won't hurt it.
If cooling is a problem I highly recommend a software cooler such as Cpuidle. It will cool the processor to within 5 degrees F of ambient in my systems. This doesn't apply when playing games. http://www.cpuidle.home.pages.de
Are you sure the MB won't handle a K6-3? Any board that will recognise the K6-2/500 should also recognise a K6-3.

ccc: Do you still have sound with the file removed? I have found my systems performance lower since replacing my diamond S90 with a SB live.

I have never overclocked before and I not sure how happy I am about doing it. I don't have very good cooling and I can't afford to fry the chip. But I don't want to rule it out, I want all the speed I can lay my hands on.

Also my RAM is only 100Mhz could I safly crack the bus up to 112 and still keep the slow RAM happy?

Yep no probs the only thing I miss when removing this file is in properties/ DIVX codec like quality/cpu , ...
Try it out , rename the bitch!

No mate my motherboard is OLD I got it when K6-2's first came out, 300Mhz, it was SO good at the time. Anyway K6-3's where never even heard of then. But the manual say it will go up to 500Mhz so I ain't complaining to much.

Yeah so I'll get that software thing and when I have saved up enough money I will get the chip and try to OC it (just a little).

P.S I was planning on getting a SB Live 1024 but after what you guys are saying you have put me off a bit.
