  • Hauppauge, capture MPEG-2?

What's needed (from the videocard) to capture in MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 format (not hardware, but software). And at what max-resolution can a AMD athlon 700mhz capture MPEG-2 and MPEG-1.
Can the hauppage wintv card do this?

I'm not happy with the output quality of real-time MPEG1, but using the Ligos "GoMotion" codec and "VfW MPEG capture" in ULEAD Media Studio Pro6 my cheap Hauppauge WinTV/Go card works fine. Under win98se you need to choose YUV capture and "custom" in the capture dialog box to get 352x240. Under Win2000 the custom setting is missing so you are stuck with 320x240 or 352x288 as your capture options. This is the major flaw in the Hauppauge card.

I've no idea what the maximum size you could use but my PIII 500 has no problem with the sizes I mentioned. Since I wasn't satisified with the quality I never tried higher, I could be wrong, but throwing more data at a time limited processing operation is not like to result in better encoding quality.
